You know, I think it would be neat to be able to choose a 'personality type' that offers different emotes. Instead of all Lalafell having the same emote, you could choose to be a more serious Lalafell, and have less cutesy emotes.

Or how about a modest Miquote? Bashful, shy and demure instead of flirty.

    Two words: Alternate Advancement

This game is badly in need of some form of horizontal progression.

Uncapped stats on gear, which would actually make crafting useful, as well as embedding material for some truly funky builds.

Imaging a Vitality/Piety overloaded WHM for Holy bombing
A dexterity based Paladin that parries like a boss, but otherwise has lower hp
A vitality/dexterity based Dragoon that can off-tank effectively

I don't know. Something that would allow for people to introduce some variety into their builds through material usage, as opposed to the enforced cookie-cutter statistic limits he have now.

this....also someone mentioned variations in emotes. those too.

also, more armor that i can paint.

it also would be nice if hairstyles weren't restricted by race/gender. hope 2.1 changes that.

I'm assuming based upon statements made in the OP that this isn't about character appearance but about builds (aka: stats?), and if that's the case I have no idea what I could suggest that would fit inside the game as it currently stands.

The battle system limits everything to constant micro damage as opposed to slower, but heavier, spike damage, so that's right out the window.

Making crafted gear actually useful past the ilvl70 cutoff and removing materia capping could work, but then you'd end up with scenarios where no one wants to go hunting for dungeon gear, which is what the entire game is built around so far (unfortunately...).

Now if I did miss something and "feature" means just about anything that could be added to the game, then I'd choose better hair lighting and physics.
Something has just felt completely off about the hair since we made the switch from 1.0 to 2.0. It looks more like wearing a helmet than natural, flowing hair.

People will probably yell at me for this but... Capes!

Lightning had one here just a few days ago, we should be able to too. Doesn't have to be any more fancy than hers either. At least after DX11 is supported.

Capes are the go to fashion accessory for lords, princesses, warriors, wanderers, mysterious strangers, etc. How can not even one single adventurer (whatever their style or purpose) have ever picked up a sheet or curtain and wrapped it around themselves to fell foes or swoon the opposite (or same, it's all love) gender? Come ooon, capes have been a long time missing in this game; from the first trailer of 1.0 they've been hinted at but not actually given.

The simple article of clothing allows for drastically different appearances and allows for different stats as well.

Capes! Get one at a Yoshi-P near you today~

body decoration ? like ribbon on the tails, arm, addiction jewel maybe ? those items should be racial & sell by NPC (you can get 1 of those for free when create character) so you can change the item to have new look from time to time

Well as for the looks I've found that while more options on character creation would be good, they aren't really needed. If you want an unique character make one that stand out from the ordinary. Most people want their character to look normal or cool and then you end up with similar characters.

Vanity system will be there for the non-character-creation options as well as the barber shop in 2.1.

As for builds, in way the jobs are like different builds. Ofc we still need to get jobs for that to make sense. But tbh a bit of horizontality wouldn't hurt. Although often this just seems like you have a lot of options to build your character, but is actualy an illusion. You end up with 2-3 builds that have to be used to be efective. It just leaves more room for people who already don't do any research to be even worse off.

I'm also not sure that materia should be there for costumization. That would limit builds to the rich. Materia should be there to enhance the performance but not decide a build imo.
