There are a lot of elements from XI that are best left to history. That doesn't mean that some elements of XI and "classic" games aren't still fun. I don't think that simply remaking XI with updated graphics would be very popular. The menu system alone was /gag.

Even so, there are examples of EQ, XI, and even BC and prior WoW open world dungeons and areas that were lots of fun.

I don't know about you, but I got excited when I ran across stronghold... but then it turned out to not really be a dungeon. I was sad.

I think as long as it is optional, then it's not a problem. There is a big difference between a required dungeon that can be contested or have roadblocks that requires a party that is hard to find... and just an open world dungeon for exploration. Required dungeons like that are a barrier to new players, and a total headache. Optional dungeons are a nice diversion for groups to explore.
