The problem is XIV doesn't have much in the way of adventure at the moment. Everything seems to be handed to the player or so linear that it seems that way. Unfortunately it's kinda the way the market has turned since XI days and I doubt we'll see anything quite like it again, shame really because they were so good. Linear gear progression is apparently what everyone wants, probably because it's easy to see what's better and you don't need to think!

Exactly. The thing is these days we NEED more difficult / versatile gameplay.

Take Titan Hard as an epitome of an example. It's a difficult fight, gets people thinking (and a fair share of rage) but in the end, it's a battle that you can't just win by no-braining. A lot of the dungeons in 1.0 and XI had a progressive difficulty region as explored.

It's just a shame that, as you said, what everyone wants appears to be "We'll guide you from point A to B"

instead of "We'll guide you from point A to B, but we'll add harder barriers and/or branching points which may ultimately lead to a point C or D".

I agree. Today, players need to be told what to do, how to do it, how often, and any deviation puts everyone in a hatred frenzy. Sad times when people don't play RPGs for fun any more.

Believe it or not, one of the major complaints when FFXIV v1 came out was lack of tutorial or direction. Don't forget, a lot of the things you see right now are because it's what people chose during the official polls. The reality is times have changed. People no longer want to wander around for hours trying to figure out what to do? Even in FFXI's heyday people ran to the internet for guides and info.

SoE is trying with EQ Next, no static mob spawn points, no linear instanced dungeons with instant duty finder travel, hell mobs wont even be in the same place twice. There will be no write ups on where to get stuff from mobs because well, the mobs will move.

You log in and explore around and try to find that feeling of adventure again. Also, never played XI but as a 10 year EQ1 vet I DO miss open contested dungeons and I literally have stories for days about my adventures in such places while playing that game.

All these new people to mmos will never get to experience the old XI (pre-aby). XI wasn't a game, it was an experience. That's probably why I get bored with most mmos now, they're all the same / too easy. I'd love to go back to XI, but then I remember what it's like now :/

That's also probably why blm went from how it was in XI, to just spamming 1-3 spells in XIV, no using different spells on different mobs, no MB, infinite mp, today's gamers can't handle anything more than that it seems.

No matter what people say or how they claim to have "hated XI", we all know what we really wanted was XI with XIV's graphics. Some people say a game like how XI used to be wouldn't work today, but from how mmos are going, no one has Thal's Balls to try it, they just keep chucking out the same thing every time. Not sure why SE went the WoW route, when they have a game that's lasted over a decade(and still bringing in money) they could have used for ideas, considering all these games that play/feel like WoW end up dying in a year or so (not saying XIV will, just an example that most do)

This is the problem, nobody can ever go back to XI and have the same experience because they tried to modernise an old game and butchered it in the process. A lot of people slate XI because they couldn't get into it, but is XIV really any better? FATE grinds are possibly the worst grind I've ever experienced! People tend to think of innovation as better. Just because something is new and exciting, does not mean it's better or more enjoyable.

I'd play a version of ffxi with ffxiv graphics! I'd love to see more of an influence from XI into this game rather than the BS warcrap were getting. I loved so many elements of XI...including the open world dungeons like the castle oz with the yagodo tribes hoping to snag an astral ring from a coffer. Ahhh don't get me started on ffxiv's lame coffer hunts...for class quests.

Don't really care. I'm all for more danger in the open world but I'd rather just have more areas, not necessarily 'dungeons" specifically.

Sad times when people don't play RPGs for fun any more.
Said people ARE playing for fun. It's the people playing it like a job that aren't playing it for fun.

Now I'm not saying everything outside of endgame dungeons has to be easy peasy lemon squeezy, but beginning players should have guidance and help along the way initially. I would not say things like FFXI's cryptic quests that leave you with no idea what you're supposed to do without looking up an online walkthrough were my favorite part of the game.

I love challenging content and certainly want more, but if we make the game hard to simply get into it will discourage people from subscribing.
