In Tactics Samurai was a tank, I heard in FFXI it was originally meant to be a tank. Though I've enjoyed and would rather a dps role.. It would not matter. I just think they look so damn bada$$!I think it is pretty much impossible that they will not eventually introduce SAM, keep in mind that SAM was not originally in FFXI either. Both in FFXI and now FFXIV I always wished for Timemage my 3rd fave class in the FF games after WHM and SMN we will see. I have heard it said maybe something Like Geomancer for the CNJ class tree that would be cool too. Question is what would SAM fall under? Would they keep it traditional as a DPS class or would they maybe venture into the Tank class field. I don't find anything wrong with wishing
Only so much tanking style to go around. Warriors and Paladins are gonna be great, in 2.1, so let's let be what is good yeah?Great Katana would mean it's basically a greatsword class.
It's funny because everyone wants Samurai AND Dark Knight to be DPS. Berserker should be DPS. Ninja is already going to be DPS. In short, no one wants new tanks. Just 11 DPS fighting over 2 spots in a 4 man group and 3 spots in an 8 man.
BTW samurai oughta be warrior main, lancer sub, as both are 2h weapon wielders. We already know that the damage combo of a warrior is decent dps for a tank-centered class so it really wouldnt be hard. ust add some offensive CD's and you've got yourself a katana toting dps class :P
I wouldn't mind Samurai being a tanking class. The ones I've met in real life* do/did wear pretty heavy armour.
I hope they have the sword spells from FF:Tactics. However, they were more of a secondary mage than a warrior in that game, IIRC.
*This never happened.
i could see samurai as dps version of the gladiator, using a 1 handed sword (though the katana is actually a 1.5-hander) without a shield. but i would be happy with some tank class too.
but i'll definitely play samurai if it comes out, no matter if it was tank or dps.
Uhhhh, you can say that about the the tanking classes/jobs available now. People who like tanking will tank, people who don't like it will roll something else. Why not give them more options? Your argument is silly.Increasing the amount of tanks available in game will only temporarily boost the amount of active tanks in game as they level to check it out. Once they are done or decide they don't like it, we will be right back to the same ratio. I do see SAM as a tanking candidate, though. DRK, I would see as a DPS.
Actually, I for one do not play either War or Paladin, and am waiting for the next tank class before I level a tank. I am hoping it is Samurai as it makes more sense with the heavy looking samurai armor and could have some really cool abilites like the FFT samurai. Ninja with it's lightweight cloth and stealthy lore makes more sense as DPS. I would play both, leaning more toward the tank because I already have a DPS class. So you are wrong, adding Sam as a tank will add at least one more tank to the pool, and I'm sure there are other would be tanks that just don't really vibe with Pally or War but would get down with Samurai.Increasing the amount of tanks available in game will only temporarily boost the amount of active tanks in game as they level to check it out. Once they are done or decide they don't like it, we will be right back to the same ratio. I do see SAM as a tanking candidate, though. DRK, I would see as a DPS.
Vikings primary ability was Provoke, they were high HP high Def tanks. They used axe and shield. Warrior in game is closer to Berserker with the two-handed axe and the berserk ability.
In the FF universe they are two different things. Viking, and Berserker.

problem is they can't really give new jobs with different roles to existing classes without altering the abilities of that class. SMN/SCH only worked cause they gave ACN skills that were not useful for DD purpose and having the pet do some of the work. So they likely have to add new classes to add stuff like samurai, ninja, dark knight and so on (or abolish classes eventually and just go with jobs)
You could do a lot of unique stuff with samurai but making it a tank will probably end up being what just another mitigation tank.
For the record, all tanks are mitigation tanks.
Also, SMN/SCH works because it's not a drastic difference in roles. You can turn any of the tank classes into DPS classes by just removing the emnity modifier. You can turn CNJ into a DPS role but it has quite a bit of healer skills (probably a hybrid). The only difficult thing is making any melee class into a healer because, as WoW has shown, melee healers are garbage.
Turns out, it was Warhammer.
