That is exactly my mindset on this class xDI wouldn't rule out Samurai as being a tank class in this game considering the direction the devs have taken with certain classes. I imagine the base class though would have a DPS Katana Job and Tank Katana Job that sprouts from it. Regardless of which role Samurai becomes, I'm leveling it.

Ninja must be added. I want Ninja, kthxbai.
There are no real tanks in the ff job system besides maybe knight/paladin

I'll be leveling Sam either way as well, but I'd greatly prefer it as a dps. I haven't leveled a melee dps (besides to unlock a job) specifically because I'm saving that fun for Sam.
I do get why people want more tanks in game, though I do not believe they'll get the results they are looking for. Instead of turning our favorite dps into tanks to try and balance things out for the DF, wouldn't it be better to pull tanks out of the plethora of FF jobs?It can go either way. As allluckys said, FF jobs don't have a big history when it comes to tanks. Samurai has always had high strength and high defense, so it fits the bill to be either dps or tank. Auron, for example, was a tank and my favourite incarnation of the samurai (with break abilities). I wouldn't mind either though.
In FFXI Samurai was originally meant to be a tank, from what I read, but it didn't work out cause of the mechanics. That doesn't need to be an issue for ARR.
Either direction can be really interesting.
Isn't Warrior already the "Viking Berserker" archetype? I mean, look at its AF, and its greataxe, and the ability it has called Berserk.
Vikings primary ability was Provoke, they were high HP high Def tanks. They used axe and shield. Warrior in game is closer to Berserker with the two-handed axe and the berserk ability.
In the FF universe they are two different things. Viking, and Berserker.

I wouldn't mind Samurai being a tanking class. The ones I've met in real life* do/did wear pretty heavy armour.
I hope they have the sword spells from FF:Tactics. However, they were more of a secondary mage than a warrior in that game, IIRC.
*This never happened.
i could see samurai as dps version of the gladiator, using a 1 handed sword (though the katana is actually a 1.5-hander) without a shield. but i would be happy with some tank class too.
but i'll definitely play samurai if it comes out, no matter if it was tank or dps.

problem is they can't really give new jobs with different roles to existing classes without altering the abilities of that class. SMN/SCH only worked cause they gave ACN skills that were not useful for DD purpose and having the pet do some of the work. So they likely have to add new classes to add stuff like samurai, ninja, dark knight and so on (or abolish classes eventually and just go with jobs)
You could do a lot of unique stuff with samurai but making it a tank will probably end up being what just another mitigation tank.
