Crafting offers the best unrestricted (no cap, no lockout) gear upgrades in the game, and SE has confirmed crafted items for PvP in 2.1. Crafting is also a good way to earn money that can be used to obtain upgrades, buy consumables, level additional jobs, and (next week) pay for player housing. If you consider better gear, more money, and all the associated benefits to both as being "pointless"... then I guess crafting is pointless.

Not to mention, some people actually enjoy crafting.
