What is that supposed to teach anyone? poo tanks are poo and decent tanks are good enough but whiny and self absorbed? lol

Tank is a job where you cannot forget the fundamentals. You have to use them all the time. DPS and Healers have their logs and meters, but you don't need a third party application to tell that a tank sucks at doing their job. You have to be able to pick up these skills and use them to play a tank.

But you know what I think is fun? People trying to push their one-sided "poor me" stories on people and end up actually being given the impression by other players that their behavior is normal and that it is okay to start acting like a knot on a log just because something didn't go exactly the way that they wanted it to.

I don't think anyone who has ever processed that thought and attempted to demonstrate their teaching technique with it has ever really, truly, sincerely... felt like they taught anyone anything relevant.

Always try. View difficulty as a challenge. Strive to be better. There is nothing wrong with accepting that a challenge is too difficult for you to manage. But there is everything wrong with chasing a dog with a vacuum cleaner because you stepped in it's poo.

As a DPS and healer I like to PUSH the tank (usually on a trash mob with lots of HP). This has been true in every MMO I've played.

    1) I need to know what it takes for me to pull hate, so I won't do it on accident or at the worst possible time.
    2) I don't want my tank to get complacent.
    3) It keeps things interesting and you see how your party reacts to a situation where everything isn't 100% perfect.

If I'm going to do it more than a couple times a run, or every pull, I'll let the tank know. I'm not going to get mad at him if I die. If he'd prefer me not to pull hate I won't. If he's upset by what I did, I apologize and might explain why I did it.

Also, if I'm CCing eventhough I'm not assigned CC I might just "see what happens" if I don't. I think this is all part of "intelligent tinkering."

I almost let a DRG fire because he would keep running off and pulling more mobs.
It's not that I cared that he wanted to keep going, I cared that while I was still mostly in my initial relic gear he was rocking full i90, so by the time he pulled the mob and stick it a few times grabbing hate off of him was next to useless. Further still, beside him, the scholar kept letting me die once I did have hate secured... against trash mobs. I've ran with quite a few groups now, both pugs and my FC and this was the first time I was just flabbergasted at how terrible the overall party was. Then the DRG kept correcting me about positioning. Again, been through it several times now, I've never had this issue come up. I'm surprised I stuck it through to the end, cause I've never been that asked with a player till then.

This annoys me endlessly. They either pull themselves or start dps'ing as I'm pulling getting instant agro.

If they pull I just move back and let them die as long as the healer doesn't rush into save them at which point I'll protect the healer. Not their fault the DPS are morons.

The only time I have threat issues is when I am tanking with an Ifrit weapon and the DPS are equipped with +1. There is a very low error margin, one mistake on your rotation or blowing a CD at the wrong time and I lose the mob's focus.

I also find that when tanking on a warrior it is more difficult to establish a threat buffer since warriors have a longer rotation (assuming you butcher block combo then storm's eye combo then butcher's again) and storm's eye doesn't produce extra enmity. Meanwhile PLD is simple 1-2-3 and Flash spam that doesn't break combo without needing to worry about maim and the slashing debuff. If storm's eye gave extra threat bonus with combo it would be much better.

    1. Look at your agro meter.
    2. If you start Medica 2/Medica spamming I am going to let the mobs eat you.
    3. No it doesn't, its just disruptive.

No shit. I also lost aggro a LOT. But in the process I learned a lot and became a better tank. That's the only point I was trying to make.

Wow this post is still going? Well, either way, taking the advice people gave, messed with a few things. Quickly figured out my problem as well: I wasn't utilizing Berserk, at all. Started getting much more cozy with it, seems tanking became 10x easier. So again, thank you to all the people who actually took a moment to post useful advice.

I was doing AK runs with my FC mates the other day. They had relic+1 and ilvl 90 gear, I had ilvl 55 weap, DL shield, and a mix of Hoplite and AF... my acc were all ilvl 40 and below. Not the greatest gear. But just to give my 2 cents and our situation, my FC mates would push me. I could tell they were first just trying to see how I play, its the first time we played together. So the first few trash groups they were pretty complacent. But I guess they could see by how active I am and how I was working to keep my aggro high, they decided to push me. And they did! They would go all out and I started losing aggro on some of the mobs. Did I let them die cause they should be managing the aggro? No, I changed the way I play, started spamming some uncombo'd RoHs to help catch up, and started being a little more strategic on my target switching. I was then able to hold aggro on all the mobs even though they go all out. Now sometimes I would lose it and I can't catch up, but they were smart enough at that point to either tank it themselves cause they are too far ahead, or stop attacking/switch targets so I can catch up on that mob.

I had the same experience with a random shout group that had 2 blms that would double Flare non stop every group.

But there are some instances where it just seems clear to me that the person wants to take the aggro from me and keep it no matter how hard I try to pull it back. Those people I just go ahead and let the mob kill them. Maybe it's a 6th sense or something but you should be able to tell who is blatantly stealing the mobs from you on purpose and who is just challenging you to see how much you can do and maybe even improve you.

It's beyond annoying that tanks don't have a good spike threat generation. But it's more annoying when DPS ignore that fact and go crazy right off the bat. Most DPS it's not so bad because they need to build up their combos or whatnot first, so I have time to get a little threat generated, but BRD's are always the worst offender I've played with. The only class to consistently pull threat off me at the start of a fight is a BRD, and half the time it's after I hit the mob once they just start unloading.

What annoys me the most is when they think it's a "tank problem", when they are the ones who aren't giving me any time to get my threat generation combo off.
