Once did most of the trash + last 2 bosses of Aurum Vale without a tank because he DC'd. SCH, BRD, DRG so no mass sleep strats either. Coincounter got kited a lot, but almost everything else was pretty straightforward because everything hits like a kitten. We came to the conclusion that tanks are irrelevant - was certainly a more fun dungeon without one.

I would gladly like to see anyone do this in content that is at gear level.
You're not surviving a boss/ 5+ mobs at gear level simply since you don't have the HP/mitigation for it.
Every role has equal importance as the next.

The tank grabs and holds the hate, the healer heals the party, the DPS DOes what they do best, if the tnk dies the WHM folows then the DPS tat is usually the case, there are special circumstances that allow the party to continue without a tank but it is difficult without a healer.

Aggro/Enmity/Hate is bind on pickup - if anyone catches it through dpsing with cds on pull let them keep them. If they die and complain, and yet do it again let them die again till they get it :>

Only exception hereby is the heal P:

Well, there are also specific situations that allow the party to survive without a healer

Tanks can whittle down certain enemies by "Turtling up" when a Healer faceplants (I'm thinking of things like the Demon Wall and certain AK/WP Bosses here) and taking nearly no damage (PLD - mainly Stoneskin spam) or Self-Healing whatever light damage they take (WAR - mainly Inner Beast spam). Bonus points if the party has a Magic-DD (SMN or BLM?) that can throw a Cure or two the Tank's way.

(I even managed that on Aurum Vale once...)

It applies equally for trash mobs, since you can blow your cooldowns and spend time recovering afterwards.
We made it through the entire final floor of AK a few weeks ago with an AFK Healer... they turned up for the start of the last boss fight, then died to AoEs at 50%. We STILL won!

Yeah, I just stopped caring. I know it feels like it reflects badly on you, but enmity is a team sport in FFXIV, so if they want to be stupid and tank it, they can be stupid and tank it. If it was an accident or if they are smart and stop dps, by all means provoke+hawk it back to you. Otherwise just move onto the next mob and hope they learn for the next pull. Threat positioning is so blatantly obvious in this game they really don't have an excuse.

I was tanking for +1 relic BLMs still in AF with an aetherial mythril bhuj or whatever the level 47 pink axe is called. All the way through gc axe, ifrit axe, garuda axe, and finally relic. Heavy DPS is a forge. You go in, you get burned, you come out hard.

The tank in part sets the pace of the dungeon run, because if the tank pulls more than they can handle, that leads to a wipe.

That said, yes people who go all out early on suck. It is salvageable if you know what to do, but doesn't make it any less annoying to have to clean up a mess from impatient DPS. I usually wait a bit for the tank to at least one combo in before I actually do more than DoT a mob. I do feel for WAR tanks seeing that their aggro generation is balanced around keeping Maim up, which as we all know takes extra GCDs to get in, and the set up can be easily messed with by DPS popping cooldowns.

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
