THIS HOW FIRE III SHOULD LOOK LIKE!!!
That sounds like you missed the class quests, as those will give you a new sword each five levels. Remember to do your class quests every five levels on each class, as not only will they keep you reasonably up-to-date on weapons/tools while leveling, but that's where you get some important class skills as well.
As for armour upgrades, as Urthdigger said, about every five levels or so. Less often (maybe 10 or 15 levels) for jewelry. For your first class, quest rewards will keep you reasonably well geared, but you may need to purchase or make gear for later classes.
Actually, in most cases the coins are worth significantly less than the NPC vendor price of the equipment. I usually check the market boards to see if there's a particularly cheap deal on the item in question (in which case I'll buy it there and then take the coins as a quest reward), but otherwise it's best to take the gear reward whenever it's better than what you currently have equipped.
You can basically get gear from your gld quest line and try to update some pieces from the npc or market place, it doesn't have to be top notch gear seeing it'd be replaced somewhere along the line anyways but least as close to the level as possible.Quests and FATEs haven't been a problem (except for the occasional, "whoops, that was a really bad idea!").
I am almost ready for the first dungeon, so where's the best place to get gear, NPC's, AH? I already did the main quests on my Conjurer up thru like L16, so that's not an option.
if you wanna avoid buying it, you can try to take up crafting or ask a crafting bud if you got one to help out and make some gear. :x

Well we'd also probably wanna keep in mind that prices varies between servers.-snip- Actually, in most cases the coins are worth significantly less than the NPC vendor price of the equipment. B4 every dungeon please do a gear check. I dont care if its level 15 or level 50, please do a gear check prior to any dungeon.
If your a tank its most important, its sad but true...the healer will have trouble keeping you alive if you have low-bee gear.
level 25 gear is not acceptable for Brayfox. Its just not good
But yeah, dont have to have top quality gear, just please gear up b4 a dungeon.
I am a winner, even though I sometimes fail.
Brayflox is a good start.
First off I think this is the dungeon where it really starts to shine, the gear that is.
The only reason I would object is simply because why wait until a specific dungeon, when in reality it affects them all! Sure brayfox is the one where you will most likely see the biggest difference but the others also make a difference.
Just my opinion though...and i guess i'm pushing it a little too hard ^.^;;

They seem like a newer player who isn't even up to brayflox.... so I don't think that particular dungeon even relates to the topic, anywho... lvl 14 glad.. that leaves you at sastasha level and considering all three starter dungeons give almost the same gear, you should be set just rocking the dungeon gear you'd need for sastasha and slowly upgrading while going through those three as you nab tank gear in them.
The three starters would be
- Sastasha
- The Tam-Tara Deepcroft
- Copperbell Mines
After this you'll be able to go to Halatali which is lvl 20 so you'd want minimum lvl 18-19 gear before you go in there give or take some gears you got from the previous dungeons seeing dungeon gear can last you for a good amount of time. ( Halatali is an optional dungeon that you'll be able to open by talking to Nedrick Ironheart in Vesper Bay, Eastern Thanalan (20-23) )

I think Sastasha is the quest I have.
Not sure how I ended up using the starter sword so long (operator error probably). I got a sword from the Lightning FATE and finished my class quest up to L15 which gave some gear. I bought what I could off the AH, but 1000 gil for leggings was more than I could stomach.
