Lore - Elemental damage / Resistance

I think the way the current elemental resistances are handle is pretty shocking. A great example of this is Ifrit being damaged by fire, he is the fire primal so why would it hurt him ?

Can we please have some elemental wheel explanation and also future content that actually requires you to not attack a monster with the element it has affinity too.

IF this game was a regular FF and I attacked a monster with a fire body then that monster would be healed. The way things stand now seem very odd and against the lore of final fantasy in general.

This has already been explained by dev in the past. They want all job/classes to be equal. With your example with Ifrit, if he was immune to fire BLM would never be picked for the fight. They feel people would exclude certain classes/jobs. Hence why they will be fixing some things with the BRD, they feel its being picked over other jobs too much.

    Woggers,

    Thats just lazy developing.

what they should do is re introduce some of the old spells and re balance the resistance for boss type mobs. otherwise whats the point in having a black mage use fire at all, its not really fire its just a non elemental attack.

I always thought that due to the Calamity, the aether got screwed thus causing the elemental damage to be negated. I know that classically with Final Fantasy games, if an element of the same time were to be inflicted on another character (with certain armor or weapon) or a monster, it would heal them. But due to the aether flow being corrupt now in ARR, elemental resistances and weaknesses exist no more. The devs could have done this with the lore of ARR but failed to mention it.

Something to go into the suggestion box. If you think people are picky about classes now, wait until PvP arrives! The only way to make it truly fair is if every picks Fox McCloud, no items, on Final Destination, 4 stock.

I think every class/job should have at least one battle (an optional fight would probably be best) where their particular role stands out and is needed. Some, like Ifrit, should be no brainers, as well as other elemental based Primals that will inevitably be introduced.

Something for the test servers (if picking classes specifically for their elemental abilities is exaggerated) is imbuing weapons with elemental damage materia again.

Haa? ours was pick what you want, on Hyrule temple, no items, ten stock.

on topic....think about it. really, elemental resistance would be something only two classes would really have to worry about (3 including unaspected): white mage and black mage.

in the end, they would be using ice and earth for ifrit, no wind for garuda, and no earth for titan.

This problem arose in FFXI, too. Different spells carried different strengths despite their elemental affinity, so weaknesses in that game became just as null. Mob is highly resistant to Wind? Oh well, Thunder is way more potent anyway. The only thing different Yoshi and his devs did differently is they acknowledged the fact that elemental affinities weren't being followed and publicly did away with them rather than hiding them behind weak mechanics.

It makes for even playing fields, if not dynamic ones.

As far as the lore aspect of this goes, I'll agree they *could* have said something about it, but this was a mechanical decision, not a story-driven decision. It's easier and smoother to ret-con than it is to explain every single developmental decision in game terms.

But as a developer of my own games (tabletop, larp, etc.), ret-cons suck.
