Most likely, it's another feature straight from WoW - you get a mount you can use exclusively for that quest, and it has a special ability that is needed to complete said quest.
Think Skyguard carpet-bombing in TBC or Ice Giant riding in WoTLK or *chuckles* giant ball of magma to roll over hordes of screaming gnomes in Cataclysm.

Nothing says those mounts will never become available later on.

Except the gobbue mount. That'll probably stay exclusive to the people who got it in 1.0.
