People should be able to, yes, but not if the mechanism of that choice harms others.
How about this:
Each player can only maintain contribution on 1 FATE at any given time. And when you enter a new FATE, your old contribution are lost forever. On top of that, if you are outside the FATE radius when it fails, you get no rewards. Only those inside the radius of a failed FATE would get the rewards.
This way people who die and run back have it the way they are now. (Although they need to be careful not to cross any new FATEs.) But people who leave early for another FATE will have to wander outside the new FATE and wait for the previous one to finish. If so many people leave that the previous FATE fails, they got nothing while those who stayed at least got something.
