The Eighty Sins of Sasamo are a subzone that we've all been to and seen, yet I can't seem to find the origins on the zone name. Any Lore-Junkies care to help me out?![]()

Ferne hinted at the origins of the strange name for that staircase in an old thread, and bascially, it was named after a past Sultana of Ul'dah and an unusual punishment visited on her for an apparent crime (rumoured, but not confirmed, to be adultery), found here:
So there you have it. Straight from the ahriman himself.Sorry that I never got around to replying to that first thread. It was an unfortunate victim of those grey months where I was back in the void...
An excellent question, though! I'm glad you cast a quick Raise on its forgotten corpse.
I can give you a little background on the oddly named locale, but only a little, because there is actually a quest planned for a future patch (written by me!?) that will feature the stone staircase and touch upon its colorful history.
For now, let's just say that several centuries ago, a certain member of a certain royal family was arrested for certain crimes, and a certain flight of stairs was used in her slightly cruel yet highly unusual punishment.
As for the rest, well...in the immortal words of Yoshi-P, "please look forward to it!"![]()
Oh wow, that's exactly what I wanted! Thank you!![]()

One thing that bothers me about that place is the fact that there are only 78 steps in total. (Three sets of 20 and one of 18) One would think that with such a name, it would have 80 steps.
I think Fern said that the places are created before they are named, therefor I think he invented the name after seeing the stairs and rounded up the number to 80, because the eighty sins of Sasamo sounds better than the seventy eight sins of Sasamo, it would be a little long.

I still believe that Anonymoose's list of sins is the best.
I can't remember, which set has 18? If it's the bottom set I seem to remember the gap between the bottom step and the ground being small enough to make me think that the current ground level is higher than when the steps were built. There could easily be two steps underground in that case.

As I recall, it was the top set that had 18 steps. I remember counting from the bottom and being surprised when I discovered that the last set had less steps than the other three.I can't remember, which set has 18? Okay then. The architect or engineers was lazy and didn't measure twice, build once![]()
