When I play the video game sure its for fun because I want to be wrapped up in the story and be taken on an adventure, its like when you see a film, you want to see something you'll get pulled into, but if you kept seeing wires or greenscreens or subtitles popped up because they didnt finish voicing you'd be pretty fucking annoying and it would "break immersion" because you would be to busy thinking "woah cant believe this film still has props lying around and a camera man stood behind Thor".

When a game becomes annoying and difficult to play and you're constantly reminded its just a game that is breaking immersion.

What is immersive in a movie? Well acted and believable characters and a story that keeps you interested and entertained the whole time. It's not about Thor's CGI effects, or about LOTR's well made decors. If you need to shoot a scene in Time Square you go there, you don't need to make a decor or a CGI Time Square. A good drama will be just as immersive as Thor or LOTR or wtv....

Video games. Do you need FFXIV or Crysis quality graphics to feel immersed? No. WOW has poor graphics by today's standards and yet it is highly immersive judging from all the players playing it. So what makes a game immersive? No it's not like a movie, you don't need believable characters or voice acting or even a good story. Mario galaxy can be just as immersive as anything else and it's just a platformer. Or if you play a racing game, you can either feel immersed playing a very realistic racing game like GTA5 and you will feel the same playing a game where you race with space ships.

playing a game where you have FUN and feel entertained the whole time. That is what is video game immersion.

Watching a movie doesn't need to be fun to feel immersed. It can be a horror or a sad drama.

A video game even if it's an action game, survival horror, platformer, racing game, mmo etc... they all need to be FUN to play.

Comparing Movies and Video games or Music is idiotic. They are all entertainment forms i agree but that is were the comparaison stops.

I'm not sure you know what immersion really means...

"Immersion is the state of consciousness where an immersant's awareness of physical self is diminished or lost by being surrounded in an engrossing total environment; often artificial."

It also suggest a complete involvement. So..

Your "definition" of immersion is addictive. Your argument is that you would feel more "immersed" in the game if you had more "fun" (altho fun is relative) and that is not what immersion is really.

What helps immersion is actually things like the story, graphics :HD graphics helps but that's not the end of it, I mean graphics in a more general way that includes environment details and diversity in the world (less apparent copy/paste), ambient sound, interactivity with the world and objects, animations of the characters, bring the cities to life with NPC having their own lives and not just standing there regardless of the time of the day, mobs having different behaviors, even jumping/swimming (please don't flame) can add to immersion. Voice acting adds to immersion because it brings more life to the NPCs, etc.

What you state is the fun factor... a boring boring game can be immersive by definition. Of course if you don't find a game fun you won't feel involved but it's not implicit.
