Immersion = feeling like the game is a reality.
FFXIV is failing that right now.
EDIT: Also, suspension of disbelief. FFXIV is failing that, too. I'm always in disbelief when patch notes come out because they're disappointing (I don't hope for anything big but...more than some typo fixes and something about targeting >_>).

I could argue that immersion = booting up a game with the intention of playing for a bit before bed, and then realizing it's now 5:30 AM, you look like a scarecrow, and you've got an important meeting at 10 AM.Immersion = feeling like the game is a reality.

"state of being deeply engaged or involved; absorption. "
You very well could, and I feel immersed when the world feels like a reality.

That's pretty much what it should mean but it should be specified that it's "A" reality and not "THE" reality. Immersion would mean that you feel that Eorzea is a reality of it's own, regardless that it is a fantasy world.
I don't think immersion should be synonym of "addictive" altho it could help make a game addictive. The major issue for immersion right now is the bad use of copy/paste... not the use of it but the bad use of it, because pretty much every game uses copy/paste to create a world, but it's just too obvious in FFXIV (maybe because the zones are too bland).

Isn't Final Fantasy supposed to be a Fantasy world? Fantasy as in not real? As in, it doesn't have to be realistic? As in, why the hell do i need to do boring work like in real life to make money or get gear/stuff?
FFVII was the greatest FF game in the series IMO and there's nothing realistic about a spiky haired skinny dude lifting a gigantic sword with only one hand, or a talking red lion....
FFX had you swimming with your armor and weapons and even do battles underwater. So why are all these things impossible/unrealistic/breaking immersion in FFXIV?
Am i playing Final Reality XIV mmo here or what?
i think you are mis interpreting immersion, its not being "Realistic" its when nothing takes you out of the game mentally, for some people this is lack of plot, for others its cheap game mechanics, for others its graphics. Since its so hard to put any consistent value on for many players, its probably better to just try to call it something else, that is more specific and descriptive, like, instead of saying running through people ruins my immersion, people should just say, i find the fact that i can run through everyone and and everymonster to be stupid, and getting lost in overly large monsters insides is really dumb. Then its clear what they mean, instead of this murky word immersion that could mean anything or be caused by anything.Isn't Final Fantasy supposed to be a Fantasy world? Fantasy as in not real? Immersion is like fun...it varies from person to person.
Is this real life?
Stick it in my Balmung.

this topic made me laugh.
When you play an MMO immersion is KEY because you are devoting huge amounts of time to the game.
Kinda like when you watch a tv show -every- week, immersion in the story and connections to the character are a necessity.
If you watched only half of fringe once every 2 weeks the show would not be enjoyable.
immersion is making the game feel like a game and not a job.
