    TONS.

Honestly, probably too many to list. This is a game that was made by FF fanboys, and is more self-aware and series-referential than even FF9 was.

This is such a wonderful thing. This game is clearly designed to capture the hearts of old-school, older fans with it's vast array of FF trappings, and it does away with the attempts of the single-player mainline games to reach a young adult audience, instead shamelessly pandering to the adults who are more likely to stick with an MMO (adults with perfectly immature senses of humor, at that -- love this localization).

Something fun to do is look for name references too. "Cid" is obvious. "Baldesion" is obvious to anyone who played FF5. "Garlemald" is less obvious, but the design of the legates' armor and the sound of the name is a clear allusion to FF1's Garland (as is this version of Cid's last name, more overtly).

The Crystal Tower is a love letter to the NES FF3 (not the SNES FF6), with the villain Xande cast as one of the emperors of Allag, and the bosses all lifted straight from it.

But what I'm looking forward to? When we finally encounter Gilgamesh -- the only guy who's been the exact same character in almost every game he's shown up in.

Some other things (editing as I think of them):

Garlemald is patterned right after FF6's Empire. Right down to the Magitek, the old emperor with long beard, and the loose-canon psycho who ends up rearranging the entire world (Kefka in FF6, Nael in FFXIV 1.0)

Minfilia might as well be FF2's Princess Hilda, for her role in the story as well as the "Wild Rose" business.

This page on the FF Wiki is also a good start (it also lists the references to past FF games that appeared in 1.0).

It's also possible that each Legatus of the Garlean Empire will represent a villain/plotline from the major games. Nael van Darnus the Legatus of the VIIth Legion was basically a huge callback to FFVII's Meteor plotline. (Descendant of the ancient race tries to use Meteor to "cleanse" the lands)

    King Behemoth casts Meteor...
Not sure if it counts, but I was glad that it did.
