Probably are alot of possible causes for what you're seeing. Since it happened right after a maintenance though, I'd propose inspecting the integrity of the game's files.

Here's MD5 hashes of each of the game's files from my machine. (as of the time of this post)

You can use a tool such as MD5Summer, http://www.md5summer.org/ to compare these hashes against your installation. If you've never missed an update, and started playing when the game was released, presumably our installations would match byte-for-byte.

If you find your installation matches mine, or also if it doesn't (to find 'why' the update process went awry). [You can always try reinstalling too] You may want to verify that your machine can pass some rounds of Prime95 and memtest86 to rule out hardware instability.

http://www.memtest86.com/ -- tests RAM / memory controller stability
    http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft/ -- tests CPU

It'd be helpful to the developers for sure (if there's legitimately a bug) if you provide more detail on what's in your machine and what drivers you're running. Perhaps there's some older drivers on there that we can try updating too / to see if that has any effect on your freezes.

Shamelessly copy-pasted how-to for generating a DXDiag dump:

-Windows Start Button > Run > Type in "dxdiag" without the quotes. Hit "OK". (If you have no "run" option, you can just type dxdiag into the Start Menu Search bar in Vista / 7)
-Wait a moment while DXDiag scans / gathers information on your machine (until the slider at the bottom stops moving)
-Click "Save All Information" in the lower right corner of the dialog, choose any location that you want. Make note of where you save the file.
-Upload the dxdiag dump to any download site [FileFront, MediaFire, etc] and provide a link.
