Packet Loss to NA servers only

Hi, whenever I ping the NA server (184.107.107.176) I get around 4-7% packet loss. However, when I ping the JA server I get 0% packet loss. Can anyone suggest a fix since it doesn't seem to be on my provider's side (I can currently ping anything without service loss). Thanks.

I'm running pingplotter and my connections are fine until they reach Montreal. Then I'm averaging 22% packet loss. =(

When I ping from friend's houses I get no packet loss. I think they just don't like TWC or something. /shrug

My solution: Switch internet providers. That's what I'll be doing after this weekend.

Test against the IP your game actually connects to, and you may actually see more dramatic results. Around a 5% loss to a webserver typically isn't going to be very detectable (that IP is for eidos.com and a handful of other sites for games in their library).

To find your game client's IP, open resource monitor (resmon from the run/search box) and expand the network and/or TCP sections and look for the FFXIV executable. The IP you want for Canada starts with 199, the ones for JP start with 124. If you are using NA/EU, it will keep one open to JP in the background and one or two up for the NA/EU servers in Canada.

As for whether it is on your service provider's end or not... it typically is not happening on your localized segments, but in one of their partners segments. Your best course of action is to get a tracert or path ping to the IP your game client is connecting to and forwarding the results to both SE and your ISP through their support portals. Posting the data here won't help much, as this is a user to user support forum--it needs to be sent through the support portal to get to the right people.

If you don't feel comfortable doing the trace and such, at the very least get the IP address your client is using and the public IP address of your local connection and forward those IP's to both SE and your ISP, and mention in there that you have been seeing elevated packet loss when you ping the server. Even though this won't have the full tracert, the ISP's will be able to terminal in to their last router connected to one of those IP's and run tests from there to try to track it down. If you don't know your public IP for your home's connection, you can get it here: http://www.speedguide.net/analyzer.php . It will be listed under the reports header (SG TCP/IP Analyzer) up top.

Or I can just change my ISP to one that doesn't have these issues. The majority of people who report these issues have it with TWC. I'm not going to continue spending money on a service that isn't working correctly, nor should I have to wait extended periods of time for them to fix it. I pay a fee for a service to work, not to work badly.

Unfortunately, it isn't just TWC that is affected. As stated earlier (and all over this forum and elsewhere) it is more an issue with third party partners in the routing. These are groups like Cogent Communication, TATA Communications, i-Web, and a host of others that are providing extended networking beyond the scope of your ISP's local segments to get them across to different markets. You don't always stay within the boundaries of your ISP's specific networks when cutting across the country, even less so when crossing borders into other countries. So changing your ISP may not resolve the problem if they are using a partner that is also having congestion control issues in their routing.

And I was talking about pinging/tracing to the proper IP address that your game actually uses. That IP is a website server--NOT a gameserver. Ping or run nslookup against these names to see what IP you get:

    www.eidos.com
    www.hitman.com
    www.justcause.com
    www.deusex.com

That's just a few examples. There's about 18 sites that point to that IP address, and run on i-web's network segments and NOT Ormuco, which is where SE is running the game servers.
