We designed FFXIV so that gear obtained from dungeons is more effective than crafted items.

For their first class, players can gain equipment from the main quests so we don't think they should face any problems. But we believe there are other chances to use low-level gear, such as creating materia or equipping them when leveling a second class.
Here's the problem that I have with this..and it's been bothering me for a bit now.

I leveled my first class (Paladin) through quests and whatnot and got the gear through that and dungeons. Fine, cool, I like it. Doesn't force me to do anything in particular. At the same time, however, I made sure to cap up my rank in my GC and made sure to do all the GC hunting logs. This gives me access to all GC gear.

Here's where your last line makes NO sense: I have been successfully able to level from 1-50 with three other classes without a single bit of gear from crafters by simply slotting in GC items instead. Due to the fact of the ease of leveling (Through Fates pre 2.1), gear has lost such value and need, and the saturation of what you guys did gear wise, that crafting is completely useless and it completely nullfies your statement of "other chances to use low-level gear". Why? I get enough points out of Fates to feed myself gear every five levels through the GC and STILL get gold in Fates and give my full 100% participation.

So if crafting is supposed to help level other classes...and yet I have the option to not even bother and just grab gear out of a GC which has better gear than crafted stuff at that level...What's the point of crafting other than a sink?

And not even a great one too.

I wish you guys, instead of just coming to sit and say "yeah so the leads say this won't happen" would actually sit down a bit longer and discuss just how you guys approached it and what their thought process was. It would help us understand a bit more.

Honestly? Crafting's pointless. Entirely pointless and a simple "do this cause it's in the game" type deal. I understand the approach of not wanting to force people to level because it's the best gear, but man...give DoH SOMETHING.

LOL WUT?! LMAO! So, since you can get gear easily though vendors. Whats the point in crafting all those levels again? To just keep us playing your game? Oh... i guess so. How very interesting.

A casual reminder to any of our new players logging in: don't be a "problem", grind dungeons and dailies. The same ones again and again and again....

Though I don't expect many will be reading the forums, I guess it would be a service to let them know exactly how the game is supposed to be played. /sarcasm

Dailies, dungeons, and guildhests. It's a triathlon every day, tee-hee!

Sorry to barge in on the thread like this, but I just re-read this reply and am bothered by it.

What is the point of having any crafting classes at all other than for food?

The game was designed so that dungeon gear is better than crafted gear.
Quests hand out gear like it's candy on Halloween.
    Vendors sell gear.

Other chances to use low-level/crafted gear...
Materia..... to put on what? Dungeon gear doesn't let you meld.
Second Class......What about all the other gear I've collected from dungeons, this really isn't a great option.

So, again, I have to ask the question, why do they still have crafting in the game if it serves no purpose?

apparently to make unwanted furniture for houses that people don't have, and can make themselves anyway.

I don't know about most people here, but in most MMOs I've noticed leveling a craft tends to be at a loss. In most MMOs the market is dominated by maximum level crafters in such a way that the person leveling it up has no possible means to make cash. Higher levels can HQ things far far easier so you can't possibly compete.

I don't understand what the logic is to have crafter classes when the crafted gear is deliberately designed to be inferior to the rest of the game's content. If it's because it's too easy to level up the crafting classes, that's the dev's fault, not ours.

Not to say it's entirely useless, but it's pretty limited. It's not just the low level market that is dying. As it stands, only really accessories have a market since very few dungeons actually drop any and the lv 50 gear has a limited venue as well because it's so easy to get Philosophy seals these days. Dyes are a kind of hit and miss since vendors sell the majority of them, even the beast tribes do too. PvP has seal gear so crafted gear there isn't much used either. It's useful to fill gear gaps but that isn't much adopted by the game's population when you can fill those gaps from NPC vendors.

Furniture is also not really a "thing" yet, though that may change in the future, and I can only hope.

Its like that through the whole game making crafting pointless. The exact reason I stopped crafting..
