Easy mode is coming ... in 2.2 (for turn 1-5)
Happy now?
If they do add an easy mode, I hope they keep all of the same mechanics. Just make the bosses abilities do less damage and give the bosses less HP. That way, people could use the easy mode as a way to practice for the real thing.
- Easy mode.
- Same mechanics/less damage/Less HP.
- No gear/Phil and Myth rewards only.
Why would anyone have a problem with that?

People sure don't get the point on a story mode. It's not about difficulty, because even if at some point you can just solo turn 1-5, by the time you can do that nobody would be interested in running Coil and you'd have a very difficult time satisfying the 'need 8 guys' requirement, so even Coil is so easy a single person can beat it, you still won't be able to see the story in it because by the time you can do that, you'd have a hard time finding 7 guys to just join you. This is the same reason why getting stuff like Cape Westwind or Chimera done is harder over time even though gear level ought to be constantly increasing, because people no longer want to do this stuff.
The story probably doesn't matter that much simply because most story tied to raid sucks anyway so you're not missing anything. But there's still a significant part of the player that have enough faith in the game to deliver a good story and want to make sure. The only way a story mode would work is that it's made into a one person instance where random overpowered NPCs just run over everything while you do some trivial task and get some trivial reward at the end.

If you can't do coil to find out, then you failed and died, game over, thus can't see the rest of the story, because you died and aren't in the story anyways.

Getting some gear from Crystal Tower when it launches will help you ease into Coil better due to the current gear gap. If the gear doesn't help, you could always wait until they inevitably make it easier. If Coil didn't have the level of difficulty that it currently does there would be a group of folks that would no longer play this game and I'm sure it'd gain the stigma in the greater gaming community that "FFXIV has no challenging elements."

Here's the easy mode coil for story.

I just find it funny how its usually the same people crying about how there is no content to do that complain about either not being able to or not wanting to do the content we have.

Eventually Coil will be eased up so everybody will be able to see the story in there. If you want to know the story there you need to be prepared, geared for it.

I think the reason why there is such controversy over this topic is because both sides don't realize one fundamental issue:
You are playing different games.
To the hardcore gamer, levels 1-49 are just filler. You suffer through the level grind so you can get to the endgame content with your chosen class/job combo and get awesome gear. And that awesome gear lets you get even more awesome gear from even harder challenges. This is your achievement.
To the casual gamer, leveling is the point of the game. You go on quests, you explore the world, and you experience the story. This is your achievement. But what's this? You can't get all the story before you suffer through running the same instances over and over and over and over just so you can get some gear to be powerful enough to see it? This is some sort of cruel joke.

You know, I think you may be right.
I don't play games for the hard-core end game content. In fact, what drew me to ffxiv in the first place was that with 1.0 your main class could be a crafter or gatherer and you would still be able to go through the entire storyline. This may also be why so many people don't understand and are angry at the suggestion of an easy mode Coil.
In all honesty, if 1.0 was like 2.0, I probably would not have played the game or had any interest in it. This is why I support the idea of an easy mode coil for people like me, who just want to play through the storyline. I don't want any shiny gear, I don't even want tomes for it or an achievement. I just want to see what storyline nuggets they've put in coil, with my character in the cut scenes. I don't understand why this would affect anyone who wants a challenging dungeon. You'd still have your challenging dungeon and your shiny rewards. I'm not interested in either, just like you're not interested in an easy dungeon. We want to experience the game the way we prefer, and our experience doesn't affect each other at all. Why does that cause antagonism and angry feelings?
