One thing I would really like to see for scholars and summoners, and any future pet jobs, is a "Standby" stance where the pet participated in combat if the owner was engaged (weapon drawn).
I believe this would greatly improve the behavior of pets.

Shield Lob (Can change red text to Tomahawk and it will work perfectly Warriors)
/macroicon "Shield Lob"
/ac "Shield Lob" <t>
/marking attack1 <t>
Better "macro switching", give it a read: http://tinyurl.com/ffxivhotbars
Been a couple days x.x, but bump.
Any feedback or reasons why this would be a bad idea?

Seems like a good idea. It could solve 2 problems:
1. U want to run through mobs ignoring them, but pet decides to fight and then disappears when player runs too far away from it.
2. In AK, when pet gets hit by void fira, he runs to succubus aggroing everything on the way.
smn pet should suffer a complete remake, they are just so boring, besides garuda ability to increase ur dot time, i fell like there isn't a reason to even use them, their dmg sux, the other abilities sux, their ai is horrible, u can barely control then in a good way, their animations is horrible, the appearance is horrible. SMN was my first char and i had to move to a brd because it was a huge deception to me.
At start he was nice, pet did more dmg then u, as it should be, but as ur lvl grows u become better, and ur pet stays the same, outplaying him complete.
I've made a few posts in other threads about the pet situation, and i agree that something needs to be done about the pet system across the board; not so much in abilities as i'm certain that each will find it's own niche once PvP is introduced.. but the
pet control system -has- to be reworked.
There's a few key things that i believe need to be addressed for the Pet system to become something that is enjoyable to use, instead of a chore to try and manage...
*Pet aggro*
Right now, if a pet draws LoS aggro from a monster, the aggro is dropped onto the Summoner instead of the pet itself, leaving a play to play "catch up" as they try to have their tank-pet wrangle the monster pack before actually starting the fight.
- If a pet were to gain LoS aggro from monsters, it should retain that aggro instead of shunting it onto the Summoner.*Pet Ability Use*
Right now, we have "Sic", which makes the pet use all it's abilities regardless of the situation. Then we have "Obey", which only let's the pet use it's primary attack and makes the summoner micromanage every of their pet -until- they command them to use an attack that causes damage and then shunts the pet back onto "Sic" mode.
- Pet's need to have their ability autocasts determined by a toggle system on each individual ability instead of the all or nothing set-up we have right now.
- In place of Sic and Obey, they need to add in a simple "attack" command (as ability use would be handled individually)*Pet AI*
As said above, the pets while on 'Sic" use their abilities regardless of the battle situation; Meaning that pets will use their stun as soon as the cooldown is up or their defensive buff before they've been struck once.
- As other games have done, abilities that stun or buff defense should be triggered by their interaction with the enemy. What i mean is that Ifrit should not use his stun at the first moment it's off cooldown but it should trigger when the enemy starts a cast-time ability or their defensive abilities should be used after they've been damaged.
The Pet AI also has a problem with positioning. As it stands, the Pets do not care where they stand in relation to the enemy, they just stay in position as long as they are in attack range.
- Other games have melee-pets have one of two positions in relation to the enemy and they're determind by having Prime aggro or not. If they have prime aggro, they do not try to reposition themselves but stay in place to tank the enemy (regardless if they are a tank pet); The second is if they do not have prime aggro, their default position is directly behind the enemy so they are not -alawys- in the way of every AoE that the enemy uses. There's a lot more to be done, but these are what i consider the prime things that need to be addressed*Pet Stances*
The only 'stances' we have for the pet is Defensive, which makes the pet run off to fight anything that even looks at the owner funny unless the pet is already otherwise engaged; Or, we have Steady which has the pet ignore everything, that is until you get on a mount and the pet is shunted back into Defensive mode, and we'll be forced to re-summon the pet upon dismount because it goes off to fight something that gives the owner the stink-eye.
- The stances don't need changing per-say, but they do need to be cleaned up. Once you hop on a chocobo, the pet should default to Steady so they don't run off; Things like that.

frostmagemari - Some really great ideas.
LOVE the idea about being able to toggle each pet ability to manual or auto. LOVE.
As for pet aggro, I agree it should place the primary hate on the pet; for clarity, the SMN should also be put on the hate list, just further down. It could be abused otherwise.
