Half true. If you went purely HQ? Yeah, you'll expect to be spending a lot of gil especially if the +1(or 2) gives you addition stats like the Alumine Set for example. Otherwise basic gear was very easy to come by and easy to buy for quite awhile until SE shifted focus purely to end-game players.

Kind of like ARR now thanks to undercutters. Let's not forget that ARR hands out all the gear you need through your career from Quests since gear in ARR has no worthwhile stats so everything is just basic gear crafted or not.
you don't seem to understand what he's saying at all.
He was talking about leveling crafting, To level up any crafting skill in FFXI you basically just had to flush millions upon millions of gil right down the toilet and even the super high end stuff like scorpion harness or the alumine set was a pretty decent loss in value from just the raw materials unless you HQ which you didn't really have too much control over.
and this was even before RMT was a thing that existed

and dunno what your doing but in FFXIV every craft I've leveled has turned a profit through all level ranges and pretty easily too. Even stuff that seems borderline useless like lavendar oil sells for some reason

but generally the options for gear is to make it relatively difficult to get like ragnarok online or ffxi and resellable or more bountiful than water and bind on use like pretty much every game after WoW

Not really sure what he spent 300k on but nothing but nothing but * and ** gear sells for more than 10k and that stuff is all endgame quality
