Quick Synth is a waste of space. It is barely faster than doing manually, doesn't even give half xp you can have, has a very low rate of HQ and the lowest you can ever hope to have is a 10% fail.
I like it, it reminds me of FFXI craft (except without the directional/weather bullshit).
You can get, what, about a hundred shards for five minutes work? You burn through that pretty fast if you're using 30-50 shards total just on the higher-level no-star synths.
If he's after the HQ Achievements it's better to go for something wearable, since it's easier to HQ the higher-durability synths and then you can spiritbond them for materia.
It doesn't matter what abilities you have when using quick synthesis. The game just uses standard synthesis repeatedly until the item is either finished or ruined. A 10% failure rate would be unusually high, but no individual person's experience is going to be a large enough sample size to demonstrate overall success rates. If you're getting a 10% fail rate you're just an unlucky outlier.
PS You can buy hempen yarn from a trade supplier for less than the value of the shards used during quick synthesis.

Nope, that's not how it works. There's a cap on quick synth success rate and it's always below %100, that's why even a fully geared level 50 crafter can fail on a level 1 craft, hence OP's frustration.
Solution: Don't use quick synth. It sucks.
That has nothing to do with balance whatsoever. You are not offering any advantage to any player, nor are you making any particular function obsolete. There is no question that every player above level 9 can complete a recipe with 100% success.Two-words: Game balance.
The trade off for you not having to sit in front of your computer while you craft stacks of items is that some of those results will fail and you have an incredibly low HQ rate. If you want to guarantee success then use careful synthesis, since the speed is about the same. Its either set it and forget it, or 100% success, not both.
The failure chance, as far as I can tell, exists because they didn't spend the time to properly develop crafting spiritbond formulae, so it's all per-craft. Easier to balance by "lolfail" than to figure out how to make the spiritbond scale properly with quality gains. Fortunately, they also didn't think consider combat gains, so spiritbonding even level 4 crafting gear is faster by combat means.
Quick synthesis is pretty much worthless once you obtain Careful Synth 2.
