Is Mailbreaker a good holdover until Garuda's Gaze/Curtana?

    Subject says it all.

I don't see why not; looking at other swords its better than Ifrit's, especially if its HQ and melded, and Ifrit's is the min for Titan.

Just get a good shield to pair with it too.

EDIT: if you meld it right (and have HQ...if you have NQ you should get Garuda's), you don't even need to farm for Garuda's, just go straight to Titan and your Relic

I think when melded fully it's better than anything until Curtana. That's generally the case with any of the 2 Star crafts when compared to their darklight counter parts.

Haven't checked the price on Mailbreaker yet, but melding shouldn't be much of an issue. Finding a shield better than the Darklight Shield I have waiting for me is tough as I don't care much for tower shields (they have great blocking, if and when they do actually block) and the Wall of Crags is not really worth mentioning since I'd be going for the Holy Shield anyway if I got that far.

In any case, I'll have some time to think it out since I'm at 47 currently and am still trying to get into the tanking mentality in XIV (which is a lot different from XI).

Since Bulwark functions as an additive bonus towers gain more from that CD, and generally when you're pressing CDs is when you really want some mitigation. Buckler or Tower it's a wash in the end.

In all honestly, if you're planning on breezing through your Relic quest (like many secondary 50s I know...heck, Ill have WAR to 50 within a few days and hope to have Baruva not long after...I do have Titan's Axe, though, and other gear ready), I would just go for Ifrit's, or even Darklight; a Mailbreaker is a pretty big expense (unless you're loaded with gil...and I'd say the same thing if you were planning on getting to 50 and buying Myth gear right away; don't waste Philo/gil on something you just won't use much). If you think its going to take some time and you'll be using that sword a bunch...go for it. It should be great if you're going to give it some love.

    Also, Darklight shields are fine.

Personally GC weapon is enough until you get Garuda weapon... Which drops fairly often ImO. I don't recommend spending money on mail breaker, instead if u wanna spend money, getting rings is a much better investment. Mailbreaker +1 is super strong considering you don't have to fight anything... But in all honesty, there are better things you "could" spend money on if you have excess money to blow. Heck I'd say, save every dime you got and save it for food. I spent a lot leaning coils.... Food starts to cost a lot when your learning a fight

The biggest issue is the cost, and now that ilvl70 items can be bound outside of coil, that's a big investment for something you will replace pretty early in your endgame career.

I'd go with a GC weapon, darklight macuahuitl, or even just an HQ aeolian scimitar, much cheaper and a good holdover 'til you can replace it with a primal or relic.

Update: As of yesterday I've upgraded from a double-melded Aeolian Scimitar to Ifrit's Blade to Garuda's Gaze. I am now in the middle of the Curtana relic quest. 450K wouldn't have been that hard to save up but I'm right glad I don't need to do so now.
