SE should consider providing its own VPN network to solve the lag problem

Basically all of my FC member living in NA were hit by the post 2.1 lag issue which rendered most endgame content unplayable, and all of the lag problems were solved by the WTFast service.

If SE is having budgetary concerns on opening more datacenters, perhaps they should consider providing their own WTFast-like VPN network which would increase their service quality while having their costs 'under control'.

I have ponied up the 9.99 for WTFast and don't feel good about it.

I am hoping SE does something.

They won't because you speak with words instead of your money.
While it suck that you have lags, the simple fact you thought for a second its acceptable to spend money on third party stuff in order to make the game that you both paid for and pay a monthly fee playable is hilariously stupid. And people wonder why this industry is going to shit

    1) woooowww! day one DLC wtfff
    2) complains all over the internet
    3) millions buy the game anyway
    4) next game come out with day one DLCs
    5) wooowwww why are they doing this??!

This would create more problems than it solves. Square would need the bandwidth to tunnel everyone into the data center (all a VPN is route) while maintaining server integrity. They would also be creating another service that would need to support and would have to have people on standby for networking support. The logistics behind setting up a VPN is daunting. Imagine Square, with their famously horrible customer support, adding on and supporting complex network protocols. The world would likely implode.

It's proven Square has no idea what they're doing regarding network infrastructure as it is. I doubt a VPN service of their own would do any good.

To be honest it's not up to SE to solve problems relating to ISPs, so if anything your ISP should be providing a VPN service as an extra feature, not really SE.

Yes and no. Though the ISP (or backbone, node, hope, etc.) are the actual problem, the masses don't see it this way and instead blame the end point. The everyman doesn't care that Level3 is having issues with SBC or Verizon. All he knows is he can't play his game and it's their fault. Square could benefit from a VPN service to save name and face to the public though I personally hope they don't as it would just be a bigger mess than they already have.

All MMOs have lag, deal with it or move closer to the data centre. VPNs give you a slight shortcut in jumps to the server, it's still not gunna make a world of difference.

VPNs have been giving a huge world of difference for many people. I don't think you understand how it works.

You say it like it happens all the time. Lag happens in any game and there have definitely been some issues, but you can't stop it completely or change the fact that sometimes you are just to slow. And what does playing Blade and Soul have to do with it? so what? I get around 300ms to FFXIVs NA servers and I play from New Zealand. I still get lag and I still move to slow sometimes.

All they do is set up a direct connection between you and the VPN providers server. This effectively makes for faster, more direct connections across the internet by avoiding how many hops your packets do to and from the server and prioritizes your connection. This is helpful, no doubt, but it still doesn't change the connection from the host VPN to the FFXIV servers, you save out on what... maybe 50-100ms depending on your location vs the VPN server. Maybe that's a world of difference from some people, but it's not nearly enough to seriously improve your play or connection.
