They need an excuse to justify crafters as legitimate classes.
Without repairs, all they have are goodish weapons.

I do not really like it, but they had reasons for it, and should have better utilized time to think it through, before making grade 1-4 Dm hard to obtain just like despected crystals at nodes.

I rather hate this system as it is. Even with Dark Matter it's still an ordeal to keep your gear spic and span, and it gets ludicrously expensive after a while. Having seen the inflation in games like FFXI and WoW, game economies work better when you don't have to rely on opportunistic players for basic game functions--for instance, having to buy ammo and ninjutsu tools in FFXI from players just guaranteed that someone who didn't have time to farm extensively would never be able to play those classes. (Yes, I'm aware of stuff like BCNM as well, but that was largely luck based and not something that could be done regularly)

Frankly, the problem is caused by crafters being considered full classes as opposed to sub-professions. I don't think it'll be possible to fully fix the game so both the economy and the actual game run smoothly until we drop the conceit that crafters should benefit at the cost of combat classes. Barring that, I'll repeat a suggestion I made in another thread. Basically, take out any kind of repairing reagents, keep the repair NPC at a similar or lower price, but make him able to fully repair gear like almost any other MMO with a durability system. That way crafters can still make money if someone wants to get a discount on repairs, but I'm not forced to stuff gear on a bazaar for an indeterminate amount of time just to get it back to 100% durability.

Really, though, I'd rather they just pull the entire durability thing when they introduce the materia system. That should do a neater job of keeping crafters relevant.
