    PS3 & SSD

I think that's what the hard drive is called, well anyway. I am thinking of upgrading as I am sick of the slow loading and extreme lag, but at the same time I don't want to spend a fortune on the HD either since I plan to move to PS4. My question is this, is it really with upgrading considering I plan to switch to PS4 and if I do what is a good inexpensive option? Thanks for any input.

You can get them on sale for like $100

Depends on how long your going to wait on your ps4 if that is worth it to you or not

Get a hybrid drive, it's a lot cheaper and provides more space.

I looked into those after people were saying this. From my reading Hybrid drives will not work on game systems because they need some kind of software or something to learn what you use most often and store that to the faster part of the drive. So it would just be a normal HDD with faster read speed and not a true SDD functionality when used in a console.

Do it mate, I got an SSD a few weeks back and my GOD FFXIV runs so smooth and fast now, almost no load times
Make sure its 5400RPM though or you'll over heat the PS3 and kill the machine, 7200 might be a few seconds faster but the PS3 wasnt built to cope with the extra heat they emit.

EDIT: example since I timed it, it took 1min from log-in screen (user name/password) to get to the adventure field (New Gridania) during UK Prime Time the other weekend

Solid state drives don't spin. As far as speed goes it will be a substantial increase.

There are drives likes this, but I think they're called dual drives. If you search for SSHD you should find the right thing. These drives handle the SSD cache transparently and the drive firmware decides what to cache. The write speeds won't be much better, but that's not really important for gaming.
I've got one in my PS3 and it works great.

Keep in mind with an SSD, you will be taking a size hit. But a good SSD will cost about $180 for 256GB. Hybrid drives have shown improvement in speeds and is almost like a best of both worlds on the PS4. Granted this is going into your PS3 but you can swap your HDD out for the hybrid if you don't mind formatting it from the PS3 into the PS4. I think it was IGN who did a HDD v. Hybrid v. SSD comparison on the PS4.

Ultimately, it depends on when you are getting a PS4.

Do /NOT/ get a hybrid drive for a ps4. They tend to rely on software drivers to determine which data gets put into flash memory, drivers the PS4 will not have.

They're also largely a gimick and rarely provide any sort of meaningful performance boost. You'd be a lot better off buying a decent, standard platter drive.
