ilvl determines stat caps, there is a reason why they inflate like they do. Stat caps are actually a function of item level. It may not be ideal in terms of number bloat and it may change when they increase the level cap but thats how they built the system for now. Its not just a number they slapped on an item, it has an actual purpose.

Item level doesn't determine stat caps, your weapon damage does. Item level is just a number they give items to let the users know how good they are at a quick glance. The number in and of itself serves no purpose to the game mechanics. They could suddenly make relic say it's item level 200, but unless they change the stats to match it would not alter it's effectiveness at all.

You know, considering you seem to be telling everyone else they're wrong and as you say, "It most likely has nothing to do with character levels", you should probably tell us what item level means, or is it that you actually don't know? Item level in MMOs like this is more of a score thing and makes it easier for developers to design content around an x ilvl average.

Yes I do. The higher your weapons physical damage, the more strength (for melee) will benefit you. I may have misunderstood what he meant by stat caps, coming from 1.0 where you could actually cap stats to the point they wouldn't benefit you, but that doesn't change the fact that item level is still just an arbitrary number.

Actually no, each item has a "cap." Though you can't really tell this cap on most unique pieces, if you meld materia, a lot of times you'll see it has no effect because that particular stat on that item has reached its cap. The item level is what determines this.

I hadn't thought about materia caps, you are right about that.
