Materia Stat Caps

Apologies if this is in the wrong place.

Was just wondering how do you find out what the stat caps are on an item? I know a notification comes up beforehand if the materia will not be used to it's full capacity, but I don't want to waste my money buying materia which may not work anyway.

A general rule is that if it already has the stat on it, you won't be able to boost that stat by much, if at all. It is all based on trial and error, there is no way to know if a bond will take until you actually try it, but taking my first sentence in to account, you shouldn't often buy something that you can't meld. If you're not sure, just pick up a cheap tier II materia and see what the message is. You can always re-sell it, and really, the couple of hundred gil that you'll end up having paid (via market fees) after you re-sell the materia for that experiment is pretty easy to make back.
