Nick Yee's 'Daedalus Project' is also good reading if you haven't, though it's information was gathered at the height of FFXI's life cycle.

completed!
Survey done. Best of luck to you! Let us know how it all works out. Seems VERY interesting.

Oh yeah, Nick was a great source, loved it. I suppose you know Richard Bartle too, OP; if you don't, you should really read his latest book (not the 4-archetypes model, the 8-archetypes one in "3D" as he called it). It's kind of the earliest attempt at players' psychological classification made (that guy was at the origin of the first MUD (Multi-User Dungeon), the consensual ancestor of MMORPG's. It's quite enlightening, even if guys like Nick indeed formulated interesting critiques of Bartle later on.Done!

From wikipedia:
"Bartle's divisions provide a foundation for investigating gamer psychology; however, subsequent studies have noted certain limitations. For example, Nick Yee has argued that a 'component' framework provides more explanatory power than a 'category' framework. Jon Radoff has proposed a new four-quadrant model of player motivations that has a goal of combining simplicity along with the major motivational elements that apply to all games (multiplayer or otherwise)."

Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.”

Thanks for all the replies! I honestly didn't expect the community to be so willing to help.
I'll be sure to check out the links you guys have posted, and I'd be happy to send you guys the finished paper. I just wouldn't expect too much, as I have a pretty tight deadline (it's for a single class instead of being a senior thesis or anything).
In regards to the question of qualitative vs. quantitative, I'm actually a science major, so this anthropology project is actually different from what I'm used to. If I had to say however, I feel like my anthropology professor focuses more on the qualitative side of things and the idea of participant-observation.

Done!
Also check out Extra Credits they have some neat segments. They are all labeled so you can pick out the ones that pertain to your research. Good luck and like the others said, please share your results!
