Any ideas yet whether or not the Latern Shield configuration on the Onion makes will have more effective mitigation vs the Kite Shield configuration on the Allagan Round Shield?
Haven't found much yet on block calculations for block str vs block rate.
Thanks Pixelshader for starting this guide, and thanks Griever for keeping it updated. I've still got to my PLD to 50 but there is a lot of useful information in here for me to use when I do get to 50.
Found a post on the BG forum but no math was shown (I was simply glancing through the thread I could have missed it) only the results.
Posted by ObsidianComparison between Holy/Allagan, Onion, and Direwolf:
Holy/Allagan: rate - 181, strength - 181. Overall block rate of 28%, mitigation 28%
Onion: rate - 295, strength - 92. Overall block rate 39%, mitigation 19%
Direwolf: rate 108, strength - 288. Overall block rate 20%, mitigation 38%
All those values are rounded down because I don't trust SE to round in the player's favour, ever.
Over 1000 hits for 500 each:
Holy/Allagan: 280 blocks, 140 damage blocked on each hit, 39200 blocked total
Onion: 390 blocks, 95 damage blocked on each hit, 37050 blocked total
Direwolf: 200 blocks, 190 damage blocked on each hit, 38000 blocked total
Personally, I lean towards the Onion shield just because it's theoretically more likely to proc on hits you'd want it to (Death Sentence), but they're close enough together that I'd just use whichever you like the look of best. Personally, I have zero interest in PVP.
Hope that gives some insight.

Yeah... I think I might have to parse it tomorrow and see how accurate that is. I looked up the math for that and literally all they are doing is going [Total Block Rate = 10% + (Shield Block Rate/100)%] and same for block strength. I'm curious if that is real math or just speculation. Also, if they add anything for Dex and Str (i'm not sure if they add anything substantial to block though in reality)
I often deferred to BG's math during my run in FFXI but I can appreciate your point of view that it's far from an infallible source.

Please keep us updated on those parsing numbers. It would be very welcomed information.
Hello,
I was reading the guide and I wanted some help with the Macros.
For example the Fast Blade Macro outlined in the guide. It seems I have to hit the button 3 times so everything goes off. Is this how it's supposed to work? I'm somewhat new to macros. I was told to put /wait somewhere in between.
Sure thing. I'll try to do some testing this week once the initial rush of new content is over. I trust that BG knows what they're talking about but there really is very little done on the subject (never needed to be) and I am really curious now if Onion or Allagan shield is better for blocked mitigation with and without all the STR that comes with full i90 left (should happen next monday).
