Screen flickers black and freezes sometimes with FPS drop after.

When I'm playing the game at any random time the screen will go black for 2-3 seconds and return back to normal. This happens every 5-6 minutes once it starts. After a while of repeating that process there will be a time when it goes and stays black, but I do hear sounds in the background. I am forced to open Task Manager and close the game from there. When I log back in again, the game seems to run fine, but I am running at a lower FPS range. I capped the FPS @ 60 since my monitor is 60hz and it ranges from 60-45 depending how intense the action is,but when I log back in after it freezes, my FPS ranges at around 45-30 fps. A quick restart of the computer fixes that FPS drop, but then I repeat the same issues. I will post specs at the end of this post. I do overclock my GPU and I feel that has something to do with my issues. However I do not over clock anything out of the ordinary and it's the only game that is affected by this as the others games run fine (no crashes).

I use the EVGA Precision X software to OC my GPU and my settings are set to this:
    • Power Target: 102% (linked with Temp)
    • Temp Target 81*
    • GPU Clock Offset: 100 HMz
    • Mem Clock Offset: 160 MHz

    Here is my computer specs:
    • Intel i5-4670k @ 3.4GHz
    • eVGA GTX 780 SC 3GB
    • Asus Maximus VI Gene
    • EVGA 650W ATX12V
    • 1TB Seagate Barracuda (game storage) & 128GB Samsung 840 Evo SSD (for OS)

Sounds clearly like a gfx probem, drivers or card. Have you looked at your System Event log to see if any errors are being logged? The fact you need to restart the PC rather than just the game to get your FPS back certainly makes it sound like a hardware problem, but maybe triggered by software.

    Thanks for the reply!

Could it be the Precision X software having trouble with FFXIV? I only use the OC settings when I play games, otherwise I turn it off. It's very odd how it only happens with FFXIV. I also play Battlefield 4, Metro, Natural Selection, Bioshock, Saints Row IV, and they don't have any issues when I run them on OC'd settings.

I'll take a look into the event log and post my results

That does sound like a driver problem (Kraggy beat me to it!). Your graphic driver may be crashing (screen goes dark) and reloading (FPS takes a hit) due to a corruption or other issue. Try to clear your graphic drivers of your machine and reload to the newest drivers available.

It may be worth it to listen to your computer too. When my OC software isn't configured right, my CD-ROM will initialize causing a framerate drop and sometimes a driver crash (though the more I tweak with settings, the more convinced I am that it's my GPU overclock software when I'm running the core frequency too high).

I found a fix to this! I posted to another site and got a simple solution! I overlooked the fact that my GPU is an SC (Super Clocked) model so I've been pushing the this card a little too hard. I adjusted the power target a little higher and was able to get stable performance. Granted the opposite I could also do is bump down the clock rates, but after seeing http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages...review,26.html. I'm happy with where it's at.

Good deal! Glad to hear you got it corrected. Voltage values are always a little tricky and are really sensitive. Keep an eye on your draw and your temps for a bit to make sure that your card stays within an acceptable temp range and you should be good to go!
