From what I understood during the LIVE Letter, there will be a way to kick people who are DC/AFK. He didn't say that it would be all the time, and there will be vote system to enact the kick.
However I disagree that vote kick is abused on a general basis. In most MMO's I've played, there always was a kick feature, and I've seen it abused much, much less than not. Really. Personally, I really don't think I deserve to be kicked generally because I make a point of being polite, explain things to others if they ask, wait for my group, etc etc. I also try not to suck when playingIn my 10+ years of MMORPG, I must have been kicked out of a group like 4 or 5 times, usually by a group of people who didn't like me, and in one case I admit I was just not playing well (I still don't think it's OK to kick a newbie but at least I know why it happened, the 3 or 4 others times were just abusive). In more than TEN YEARS of MMORPG, 5 times maximum.
However in this game, seeing how many people behave, the sheer amount of jerkiness, I really can't tell. I'm still puzzled that the Final Fantasy community isn't nicer, because I thought that given the ingenuity of this franchise mechanics and game systems (especially solo titles), the positive values and philosophy of the stories, as well as the generally "nice" ring that FF fans have in real life when I met some of them here and there, well… I really thought FF fans were much nicer than many other communities. But nope, it's a CoD-LoL level. I'm quite disappointed, a bit sad about that.
Like for instance, Star Wars, with its very manichean and cocky spirit, I'm not surprised to meet jerks in the Star Wars community (they just 'fit' within the lore, Sith's lack of empathy, Jedi's condescendance, absolute 'good' versus absolute 'evil', when you admire such things it may say a lot about you, you know?); but the Star Trek community, given the values of these stories and the characters? Hell Yeah, the Star Trek community is just about the best I've known. Really really nice people on average. Tolerance, open-minded, great common sense, aware of this world's pains… The LOTR community is quite nice too, for that matter. Even WoW's community, that people like to tout as the worst of all, just isn't. Really. It's nowhere near as bad as it is here, seriously (played Vanilla, BC, a bit of Cata and a bit of MoP).
I'd have expected more of a "Star Trek feeling" than a Star Wars one here. Sadly, I guess I was very, very wrong about that.
Am I digressing? Yeah, a bit. haha. Well my point was that I never feared a kick feature but here… I don't know. It's probably a good idea to put many restrictions on it.
