I don't agree with you OP, I thought the fates were fun, and rewarding. You're telling me you don't like running around in that Snow coat? Try being less of an entitled cry baby please.

You can use the various forms to change the position of enemies by creating distance with commandos and planting them there for AoE with sentinel. Using it for bosses can keep damage minimal by spacing your party through understanding how the different roles play.
That's much more dynamic strategy than just picking a counter spell.
Not to mention working with the gauge by using different combinations to decide if you just need healing or you need a tank. Are you already in the burn-stagger phase while needing the healing? Then you gauge the life left of the enemy to decide if to burn with two ravagers or to slow the stagger decay with commando/ravager while continuing to control your positions with the forms.
You say that this game dictated how you fight when this game actually has a very dynamic strategy system that can be used in different ways.
There is actually much more freedom than LIBRA ---> USE COUNTER SPELL + STAY ALIVE.
Again, you can beat the game without utilizing all the paradigm but it's much more satisfying when you do use it.
At that point, having fun with the combat is up to the player, as strange as that sounds.
That way people who just wanted to go through the game could. But you can't judge the system if you did that.
I'm sure you did if you can't find ways to use it. Especially if you think the atb systems before were more strategical.

What boss were you fighting that required you to spam Death? The only time I ever touched it myself was for screwing around and for the random times I poked the Adamantoise things.AI is stupid, casting spells it shouldn't. "This boss is very susceptible to de-protect" Npc spams useless abilities completely ignoring what it's susceptible to. One fight in the game you can't even beat without playing as a character cause they are to stupid to cast death over and over. The ochu in chapter 12. The fight is completely fought for you, you spam X that's it.
ahhh yes, the Adamantoise. Those where awesome sauce to beat.
As for the Fates, i quite enjoyed them. The whole god's aspect was a nice touch since it made sense to the 13 series in general. I mean what else could of Square have done with her?
Expecting "real content" from temporary events is kinda silly. I'd rather SE put thee efforts on things that stay and not temporary stuff like seasonal events or any other event for that matter. I love events but not at the expense of content that can stay forever.
And the whole Lightning event is pure marketing obviously (not that I'm against it) but really shouldn't have expected her to be main character or something lol...
