Crappy items in chests

In a number of dungeons (Cutter's Cry, Sunken Temple, Stone Vigil, and Darkhold to name a few), several treasure coffers have really crappy items in them. I'm sure you are all aware of this, but why is that? Is there some trick to get them to drop better stuff, or is that just the way it is? I'd rather get bronze pieces any day than some of these, it makes me feel like going out of my way to open chests is largely a waste of time.

They're crafting items. You make something better out of them. The problem is that people rush leveling, and don't bother with it, so they don't see much use.

Dodore wings, from Aurum Vale, are used in making militia trousers, spiritbond those, and you have a chance at a Vit IV materia, just under a quarter million gil, or Battledance IV, right at 100k on Sargatanas.
