I personally have never needed to buy any shards. I get a ton from just playing and doing quests.

That's because at your crafting level, recipes don't require many shards. Also you can farm the shards with miners and botanist. Leveling multiple DoH has taught me that initially, you do seem to be self-sufficient but as the cost of shards per recipe increases, you need to either gather or buy.
