Yeah, DisciplesoftheLand.com is wonderful.

Here are my tips for the just-beginning fisherman.

1) Make sure you've got the right kind of bait equipped. There are two kinds: ocean and freshwater bait. If you're fishing in a river or lake, make sure you're using freshwater bait. And obviously, if you're fishing in the ocean ... well, yeah. You already guessed that one.

2) When you get a nibble, wait. If you get 3 nibbles in a row, go ahead and jig. I've never actually had a bite after the 3rd nibble. (Someone with more experience than me can correct me if I'm wrong about that.)

3) When you get a bite, jig. Then you're going to play the same hot/cold game as you do with the other DoL. A lot of times, it makes sense to start in the middle. If the tip of your fishing pole lights up, try to jig in that same spot again. If not, jig to one side or the other (about halfway to the right or left of middle). If you're getting closer, jig further out to the same side. If you're getting colder, jig to the other side. (Eventually, you'll get a better idea of where the fish at this particular spot are biting, and you can start by jigging to one side or the other, but if you're not sure, feel free to just play around with it.)

4) I was surprised how much it helps each time you upgrade your fishing pole. It makes a noticeable difference in the amount of bites and catches. Obviously, don't use a pole that's above your level, but it helps to upgrade whenever possible.

5) There's something called "jig lag." If you wait too long after you first get a bite -- we're talking about 10 seconds or so -- before you jig, then you're not going to land your fish. So you can't really do something else too much while fishing.

6) Be patient. Mellow out, listen to music, listen to a book on tape, watch a movie or something while you're fishing. It should be a relaxing experience. I've got friends that end their play sessions with fishing to relax a little. So don't let it be a frustrating experience. Sometimes you'll have a run when you can't catch anything. Don't let it bother you. Just have fun.
