Being able to get better gear as quickly as you do, there is no need for it beside DoH and DoL gear.
As for DoW and DoM useless as AF gets you all your CM and even WP wins as you build up points for tomes

I agree, the current system is hopeless.
Why even have stat caps, if you wont tell us what these caps are! (Having to use google to *try* and find the correct caps is beyond a joke...)

The materia system is perfect. While the Item team realizes you’d like to see more uses for materia in amplifying item stats, they clarified that there are currently no plans to change the stat caps. The way the system works, each item follows a hierarchy and adding materia to any item, while improving its stats, will not change it to an item above its level.
Just need to up the play with tier V materia and higher level items that can be melded.
Not a joke, and its very simple to understand. If an item has Vitality on it you dont meld vitality to it. Very simple.

the way to obtain materia is annoying...spiritbonding >.<
Fantasy above reality.
Some items with set stats can still be melded with that stat. Some items with Crit for example, can still take some Crit melded, but you don't know until you try.
Once you work out what stat you can use, you do not know how much of it you'll be able to meld. Thus you cannot plan your melds. i.e. You meld Crit IV (+9) onto an Astral ring, you then try to meld Crit III (+6), but then you find out the crit cap is +12, so you would have saved a lot of gil buy just melding 2x Crit III.
Unless you actually *know* the stat caps per item, you cannot plan your meld, your basically taking a shot in the dark.
Hence you need to Google for stat caps and hope you don't accidentally end up on a site that looks to be helpful, but is actually trying to steal your game passwords.
A simple tool tip with stat caps would make melding much better for everyone.

This video (and the text script in the description) is very helpful for stat caps.

I agree that the system could be more transparent, but there IS a method to the madness. It's just that, like several other aspects of this game, it demands that you pay close attention to the rules.
I understand that people hate the materia system. While it could certainly use some improvement I think a lot of it has to do with not being familiar with it. I don't know how many times I've answered a shout for a "quick relic meld" only to stand in awkward silence while someone learns the basics of the entire materia system in front of me.

Sadly, this.
As happy as I was that materia was coming back and that it would be used to augment/enhance weapons and armor, I had no idea it would be so incredibly limited in the scope of items you could actually use Materia on.
I have as of yet, had a single reason to use materia outside of using the 2 materia needed per relic weapon quest.
I was hoping materia would be something that would actually be important/useful throughout my leveling experience, but then I realized I'd have to actually level a crafting class JUST to be able to meld materia to an armor. And then it's further restricted because you HAVE to level up the crafting class that corresponds to the particular armor or weapon you are wanting to put materia into before you can even use the materia. I don't recall any of the FFVII gang being crafters. Last time I checked materia was a ball/gem and you just put it into the slot on your weapon and you were set to go.
I don't really mind that it's a crafting class feature (since that actually makes them semi relevant). What really bugs me is that you can't put materia into (nearly, if not all) unique/rare weapons and armor. That's the kind of armor/weapons I want to be using, not GenericCrafted Armor #3 or NotSoSpecial Crafted Weapon #5.
Relics should definitely have Materia slots, Hell all weapons should have materia slots. All armor should have materia slots. Let people customize their stuff more. Jeez. The fact that you can't put materia into endgame weapons and armor unless they are crafted weapons and armor is F'ing stupid. Certainly something I hope that changes in the future.

I don't want more stat treadmill nonsense like currently makes up the entirely of the end game. I want an interesting system. Give us materia that apply secondary effects to auto attacks, materia that alter how certain spells work ({All} Materia, anyone?), materia that actually do neat things instead of "Yay...higher stats. Again. /snore"While the Item team realizes you’d like to see more uses for materia in amplifying item stats, they clarified that there are currently no plans to change the stat caps. The way the system works, each item follows a hierarchy and adding materia to any item, while improving its stats, will not change it to an item above its level.

After you've done a little bit of melding, it's actually very easy just to look at a piece of gear and know the materia caps. I had no problem planning out my melds on my Vanya/Astral gear just by looking at the natural stats. That said, a tooltip would be lovely.
