This sounds oddly like the spin-off Final Fantasy game series Chocobo's Dungeon :3

Speaking of that series, Chocobo's Dungeon 2 is the greatest game of all time. If you haven't ever played it before, I highly recommend you buy a copy, blow off the dust from your PS1 and start playing immediately!
