"There's a time when a man needs to fight, and a time when he needs to accept that his destiny is lost, that the ship has sailed, and that only a fool would continue. The truth is, I've always been a fool."
There are some items my FC was unable to provide me with, which I had to buy. Of course, the main things my FC provided (other than cheers for each Level up) was the gear to craft in.
... wow dont think ive made 400k my entire time in this game my 30 day free trial finally ran out around the 5th of this month and ive already popped 50 leather, 50 carpenter (first since im from Gridania), 50 weaver, 50 goldsmith, and im up to 30 blacksmith started him about 3hrs ago... first off id suggest farm the main mats which leather is skins obviously I spent a total of about 3hrs grinding aldgoat once, 5hrs on toads and another 5 or so on boar. if i can collect it or make it i do that unless its dirt cheap and im lazy. Then repeatable leves up to the 35 then cap. Like someone here said wool sucked for weaver dont know never touched it never touched diremite either I jumped from cotton to linen then capped it on linen using leves but the same holds true for the rest and my blacksmith soon hope to be 50 by tonight might have to farm some ore though down to 10k and rarely see over 40k so wow 400k to cap leather?. give those leves a looksy find a cheap one and grind it.
If you are leve leveling the gil from triple rewards should mitigate some of the cost, otherwise you make your money back by selling the exact same high-cost items you had to turn in for leves. For LTW I'm not sure but many other professions need leather and it's somewhat expensive, that's probably a good source to make back money.
I leveled Weaver back before they increased karakul spawns and fleece was 500 each, I reduced my costs by farming the fleece myself and sticking to leve items that only require linen, you might be able to do something similar with Leatherworker. However this was over a month ago, and I easily made a million gil from weaver once I hit 50 while now the economy has normalized a lot more. I stopped leveling crafting professions because I'm not so sure you can make the money back easily anymore.
Being a allcraft with Gathering I found I actually made a net profit when leveling my crafts to 50...funny that.
Took me 500k and 50 leves to get Carp to 50 from 15.
Weaver was all me.
For Leatherworking you should look for any leves that reward you with more raw materials (skisn) since those are generally difficult to farm and expensive to buy.
You know, I am not sure never hitting 50 yet, but I found LTW easy to level past the aldgoat level. Most things leather are straight up animal/monster drops, except for the handful of other class items, and you can in fact level almost purely by making leather. What I did is I farmed animal skin. Leveled purely on that until diminishing returns. Then I farmed hide, and did the same. This brought me to the aldgoat stage without spending any money at all beyond equipment repairs, and now I had several stack of leather and hard leather, which I then sold on the market for enough total to purchase alumen for half a stack of aldgoat leather. When I ran out of alumen, I turned around and sold the aldgoat leather and bought more (and still had gil left over) to keep leveling. While it was time consuming, I never actually invested any money apart from equipment repairs, and even that once I reached the aldgoat stage, I was covering with income from the ltw itself.
In terms of things that must be purchased, I think CUL is actually the worst to level, because right from the first level every single item must be purchased, unless you have a BTN, and even then they are from all over the map including la noscea so even farming yourself you have transport costs. Not to mention there are a few key items are not farmable. I never made a fraction of the money on CUL as I invested. I was spending ridiculous amounts even before level 15.
Hmm... I make a profit or break even when leveling crafting. I don't do leves though. Just craft everything and sell it.
So far only Goldsmith and Weaver though... Lets see what happens on Carpenter.
Behold: the power of Nuclear Fusion (http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/character/1578266/blog/546323/)
Weaver is by far most expensive on most servers in theory - in practice if you're smart you'll avoid burning wool to level, and instead stick with the linen leve turn ins at level 40-45 til you hit 50. I personally didn't find leatherworker to be any trouble at all; but then I also farmed most my own leather and Balmung seems to have a surplus of raptor leather (selling at below crafting cost)
