Crashing after hitting "Play" - Windows 8.1

My client won't launch the actual game. I played the game late last night and was not having an issue. I think however, my computer did several Windows 8.1 updates last night. Now, the game crashes as soon as I log in and press "play".

I reinstalled the client - same issue. I also cleaned my registry using a registry cleaner...no dice. What happened???

This is a generic memory access violation. The 0x00000000 offset is a nil pointer, which means you'll never know where things are going wrong or what went wrong. You'll have to completely wipe FFXI from your system and try and reinstall it. If the problem reappears, something in the OS or another application is interfering. Good luck at that point. My suggestion is unless you're using a convertible laptop or touchscreen AIO desktop, get rid of Windows 8.

Fixed after uninstalling 5 windows 8.1 updates. Figures as the game was working great until I ran the updates before quitting last night.

Ok, same problem here. Was working just great yesterday, now as soon as I hit play, it crashes the game. Windows 8.1. Same as OP. OP, do you know what update you uninstalled?

Ok, it is one of the four updates in KB2887595 that is causing the problem:

When you install this update (KB2887595) from Windows Update, KB2898514, KB2901101, KB2906956, and KB2908174 are included in the installation.

After I uninstalled all 5 updates, the game worked again.

Square, you are going to need to get this fixed obviously as the total list of fixes address by those four patches is rather long:

It would be nice to get a solution to this - I'd like to be able to proceed with windows updates sooner or later knowing that the game (and my other steam games) will work after
