OP I've seen this thing before but not really thought about it. The dome appears to be made of crystal though which suggests it's part of the aether explosion that devastated Mor Dhona (and created the Crystal Tower) after Dalamud's fall. I'd guess they plan to explain it at some point.
There's actually many more impact sites of pieces of Dalamud or crystallised aether scattered around the world, although the Burning Wall (Eastern Thanalan), Boulder Downs (Coerthas) and Agelyss Wise (Eastern La Noscea) are the three most well known, there are some similar yet smaller impact sites, like the Salt Strand near Moraby Bay in Lower La Noscea, the appropriately named Dalamud's Talons in Northern Thanalan, and the obvious chunk of crystal sticking out of the Pharos Sirus on the Isles of Umbra in Western La Noscea.

There are also at least two big chunks of Dalamud seen which haven't seemed to have caused a mass of aether to crystallize into weird shapes - the well known chunk near Fallgourd Float in the North Shroud, and the Frozen Nail near the Observatorium in Coerthas. There's probably other chunks found in other areas too, but these are the ones I'm aware of.

Finally, there are several crater like objects with crystalline elements which can be seen in the distance in some areas, but can't be visited yet - one of these is offshore near Limsa Lominsa (during the beta it was believed the be the location of the PvP arena), and two are in the Black Shroud, one near Camp Tranquil in the South Shroud to the west, and another seen in the distance in the Central Shroud near the Spriggan Dig in the Standing Corses.

What these strange places could be is anyone's guess, but I'd say there's a very strong chance they too were caused by Dalamud's impact and Bahamut's rampage. But I guess we'll see.

Thanks for this, I had no idea just how many impact sites there were. With regards to the Burning Wall and Boulder Downs though these two both have planned entrances already prepared for future coil additions (or potentially some other dungeon).

In the Burning Wall there is an opening in the fragment of Dalamud with a path that runs right into it. The path is even shown on the map despite currently being blocked off by a piece of crystal.

In the Boulder Downs there is a cavern entrance that begins to run down into the rubble but that too is currently blocked off.

I haven't seen anything like this at any of the other impact sites which is why I assume they're the future coil entrances.

Thinking about that dome again though... it's half a sphere of crystallized aether. Louisoix summoned a rather large spehere of aether to attempt to imprison Bahamut again. Could it be the remnants of the failed attempt having crystallized afterwards instead of simply disappearing? It does appear to have landed around the Cartenau area and it wouldn't be Dalamud itself since we saw it completely explode into thousands of pieces.
