You do realise Xbox has done this for years and years, and as far as I know are still planning on making Xbox Live necessary for online gaming on Xbox One? if 4.99 a month pushes you to play on a PC then fair enough but it's not enough to change most peoples preferences. Compared to most things that price is tiny! I don't live in America but I would be confident to say that's less than 1 McDonalds meal a month, for unlimited online play, free games, discounts on over half the games on PS store etc etc.

The point i'm making is if you need to worry about 4.99 a month, you probably shouldn't be buying a PS4 let alone a gaming PC!!

I never owned an xbox 360 but my understanding was normal multiplayer generally only required silver membership which was free (which was all FFXI required as well)

The point is I don't want to pay completely unnecessary monthly costs if I don't have to, regardless of financial need. Why pay more to play the game on a console when you can pay less to play the same game on the PC, and probably with better quality? The choice is obvious if you ask me. I can't believe people are defending this.

If you need a $5 monthly fee for no good reason just to show people you're not poor or something, power to you. But having money doesn't mean you have to waste it unnecessarily. I'll play my multiplayer games on the PC (or Wii U), which don't charge extra for a basic feature.

You're not the only person in the world? People prefer consoles a lot more to PC's? There are many arguments for this but I'm not gonna even bother getting into them. If you cannot accept peoples preferences and then slate them for spending $5 a month for that preference then you might as well be insulting anyone who pays a subscription for anything, including yourself seeing as you play this subscription game and pay a lot more than $5 a month for.

And as someone who owned an Xbox from day 1, you needed Xbox Live gold to play any game online except XI and possibly any older MMO's that were on 360. There was absolutely no other benefit of having Xbox Live other than playing online. No free games, no discounts at all, you had to pay full price for everything on top of the subscription.

I'll still be trying to make my roommate get this game, need someone that I can force to shuttle stuff between my 2 characters & not have to worry about disconnects between logging.

Dunno if you're just stating as 'At Launch' or 'Ever', but XBox did start offering some games for Free for Gold. But, that's not what this thread's about...

There are people that prefere graphic to anything else in a game and spend a lot of $ to build their PCs.
Personally I prefere to get a console and spend what I saved to buy games, besides avoiding all the issues you can get playing on PC.
I'm playing XIV on PC just because I cannot get myself to switch between a pad and keyboard when needed

That's not a valid agrument for charging for something that used to be free. Again, I'm amazed people are okay with this in general, especially considering how hard a sell MMO subscription fees usually are.

On ps4 you don't need plus to play ffxiv or any other MMO that's coming for that console.

But you do need it to play most nonMMO/f2p games. again, paying for something that used to be free.

yeah if you want to play them online. Last generation it was free to play online multiplayer and yet I still paid because of the games you get with it. I have only bought one game for my ps vita and have played different games like the uncharted one and gravity rush a lot ( i only bought dragon's crown). On the ps3 I got to play a lot of games that turned out to be quite fun. If it weren't for ps plus I wouldn't have bought them.

I get what you are saying but if you don't want to do it then don't. I get a lot of value out of my 50 bucks a year.

I do game on the PC also and it's great with the steam sales and humble bundles. I don't see an issue here.

Don't know it you're trolling, I should probably ignore these posts of yours but… for the sake of others who read, let's state facts, shall we?

I'm PC player mostly. My bias, if there is one, is rather in favour of the PC most of the time.
However it's universally recognised that PS+ has insanely good value.
Digging deeper into the business model that's behind, here are a few things to consider:
    • Whereas developers could run servers themselves for multiplayer, there's a good chance that a mutualised datacenter provides much better quality at a much lower cost. It benefits game makers and game players. Sony repeatdly stated that they don't make much profit (if at all) from PS+, the price point is tailored to maintain the service and increase the value of the PlayStation platform and its products. It used to be free, but the overall cost of running multiplayer (MP) servers was overall much higher, and was at the publisher's expense, which doesn't help driving game prices down, nor having top quality for a MP experience.
    • It's a sound logic that Microsoft invented on the Xbox (Xbox Live Gold), however they've been much more greedy (higher price, less perks, ads on top of it…) and admittedly Sony just got much better at it with their PS+ service.
    • It also allows Sony to essentially mass-buy games licences for their PS+ subscribers, which is good for developers (who get a steady or huge base revenue for their games) and gamers (who get tons of free games). It's a perfect illustration of a win-win situation. It gives incredible value to the PlayStation ecosystem.

Here's food for thought: One Year of PlayStation Plus Value In Free Games: $1854.86 (a one-year sub costs $49.99)
Consider the incredible list of games you get for free once you're subscribed: that's just awesome.

I'm a PC gamer, but I would subscribe to a PS+ service any day if it were available. It's like Steam Deals on steroids! (and on average I spend much more that $5 a month on Steam, to get much less games overall).

There is just no sound argument to claim that PS+ is bad. It just isn't. It's a great thing for this industry, an overwhelming proportion of insiders and customers agree.
