As others have said, no, it's not required. It's even been said, by Sony, that if the publisher provides their own servers they can choose if the player needs PSN+ or not. And SE has already said not.

The local store SONY rep specifically told me I would NOT need PS+ for FFXIV or pretty much any MMO as they do not use the SONY servers.
Games like Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Dead Light, etc will need PS+ because they use SONY servers to run the Multiplayer.
You cannot do this; it can't currently be done with a PS3 and PC, and thus you won't be able to do it with PS3 and PS4, or PS4 and PC.If you want the PS4 version for Free you will no longer be able to log into the game using the PS3. However.. if you choose to buy the PS4 version you could in effect have both games signed in on the same account giving you a rare option to create MULES by sending yourself Freind Request to yourself.
but wow, $5 a month to play *any* ps4 game online? fark that, I'd be really suprised if that didn't push more people to join the PC master race.

Networking and maintenance is expensive. $49.99 ($50) / 12 = 4.1658(rep3) or 4.17 a month. 9.99 / month for 30 days and 14.99 / 90 days. This is by far cheaper than say 14.99 / month for 1 game's servers and maintenance. You also get access to free games and much much more. So yes, PS+ is a good thing to pay for (by the year).
you cite networking costs, but I already pay for that with my internet service, and Sony customers pay for that with their hardware and software purchases as well. PSN Plus (meaning the optional service that was on the PS3) and xbox live gold should be bringing in plenty enough money to cover those costs.PS+ is required for NON-MMOs.

On a PC i dont have to pay any money beyond my internet service to play any game online other than a subscription MMO.
What would you rather do? Pay $50 a year to play COD on your PS3? or pay $0 a year to play it on the PC, especially considering your PC can use the same televisions and controllers your consoles use?

Personally I despise Call of Duty and 90% of the FPS market. Not only the maintenance and servers are bing paid for but also the discounts and free games you get from being a + member. In fact, Dragon's Dogma's rebuild was a FREE download (normally $39.99!) When I activated my Plus last week.
I bet you have a GameStop Discount card ($14.99) and yet you probably don't complain about that.
I do not, there isn't even a gamestop within 20 miles of me nor do I use their online store. This also doesn't address the issue i'm raising. You're simply making an irrelevant accusation without any sort of basis.I bet you have a GameStop Discount card ($14.99) and yet you probably don't complain about that.
I wasn't asking for your opinion of the game, I was making an example by naming a widely played game (regardless of how good people think it is). The point is, you don't need any kind of paid online service to play anything other than subscription MMOs on the PC.Personally I despise Call of Duty and 90% of the FPS market.
This isn't the part I have a problem with. Those are appropriate benefits for that kind of service. Requiring it for something as basic as online multiplayer which until now basically every gamer everywhere was able to enjoy for free is what I have a problem with. Not only the maintenance and servers are bing paid for but also the discounts and free games you get from being a + member.

I work at Gamestop - and as far as is understood at this point and time --- things you have to sub separately for ( I.e. Netflix & Hulu ) will not require PS+ to use on your PS4. Free to play multiplayer games and MMO's can be inside or outside this parameter, which is mostly due to publishers decisions from what we are told. Things like shooters and such - games that you purchase and play online but do not pay a sub for - do require ps+ obviously ( I.e. Halo, Ghosts, etc )
So for whether or not FFXIV will require it... if its the publishers choice on what servers to use etcetc and they take a route so we don't have to, then we wont have to. I believe I did already read that Yoshi has said we wont need ps+
But guys if it turns out you do, do yourself a favor and get the full year of ps+ for 50 bux ( less than the price of a brand new game ) instead of 19.99 for 3months lol. =)
For me, it wont matter too much either way this goes becuz ill be getting other games for my ps4 that I WILL want to enjoy online so :P And I'm pretty sure other people here wont be buying a 400 dollar PS4 JUST to play ONE game on it lols...

The point is, they're nickel-and-diming you, they priced the PS4 lower than the Xbone and lower than the ps3 was at its launch, but taking away free online play. So now there's an ongoing cost for almost any game that isn't wholly singleplayer. Again, I point to the PC and the many great games on the PC and how there is no big governing body over the PC that can declare a fee to access online games. By submitting to this, you're telling Sony that it's OK. Maybe they're fooling you into thinking that by paying $5 a month you'll get a better online experience? Unless it's a first party title they pretty much can't guarantee that. For me, it wont matter too much either way this goes becuz ill be getting other games for my ps4 that I WILL want to enjoy online so :P And I'm pretty sure other people here wont be buying a 400 dollar PS4 JUST to play ONE game on it lols...
This thread is jsut another exmaple of two of the big console players totally shooting themselves in the foot some more after they've already done it a lot in the previous generation (With nintendo kinda chilling in the background not really doing a lot to advance gaming but also not doing a lot to alienate its fans either).
If I did buy a ps4 I wouldn't be playing anything other than this game on it since playing any other online game would increase my monthly costs for no good reason.
