    Some dungeon questions

    Hello again,

So, I've been watching some dungeon runs on Youtube. Some endgame, some as you level up through the story.

I did notice one thing, when it comes to pulls... do players just AOE things to death or focus on one target at a time while the tank holds the adds? When I grinded as a Marauder back in Beta/EA I didn't really notice it much, but I was at the lower levels.

If I were to roll as THM/BLM, I'd usually just sleep the adds and focus on the target the tank has, but I'm seeing various setups dealing with "trash" mobs. Like tank holds one or two adds, while dps takes another add separately.

My mind is still at old-FFXI mindset, which probably isn't a good thing for this game, in FFXI when it came to adds BLMs always slept and focused on one at a time.

I(BLM) only focus on the target the Tank has marked or is attacking. I usually sleep all the others but it depends on the party make up and playing style of the Tank. Up til now I haven't used AoE's much, the Tank is suppose to hold aggro on all enemies from what I've seen and been told, if others are pulling aggro it usually doesn't end up with everyone alive at the end of the battle

    Pull of...

    < 3 targets : Single target attacking
3~4 targets : Tossup, depending on party makeup and/or personal preferences
    5+ targets : AOE

IMO... I would say you should generally be focusing on single target for trash mobs if you are in any dungeon pre-50, with a few exceptions. Typically if you get a really really large pull they tend to have lower hp and are more viable for AoE.

Post-50, you will eventually be able to outgear dungeons much more so than you can in lower level stuff, so it's definitely in your best interest to AoE in these situations when your tank is geared well enough to hold as many enemies as possible.

Sleeping and killing one by one is far safer, and arguably faster if it's only 3 mobs tops. If you're fighting more than that, it's probably because the party is trying to speedrun. And AoE is unquestionably faster with that many.

Thanks for the replies, I'll just have to be perceptive when it comes to raids.

Follow the same style as you did in FFXI,

sleep the mobs and focus on one, problem is sometimes tanks do not number them, so you probably want to hold back the attack first and see which one the tank is focusing.

Unless for speed runs, the team expects u to AOE the whole mobs stacked, its a different style. So probably you need to justify before you enter Wanderer's Palace/ Amdapor Keep, whether is it speed run or normal run.

I will say one thing that helps is to ask the party if they want you to sleep things. This often works as a cue for other DPS to focus on a single target. Also, if the tank insists on switching between multiple targets or using Overpower, let him know this little fact: When a mob is asleep, the healer won't get enmity for healing the tank. So, if he had hate on the mob before it was slept, he should have hate on it when it wakes up.
