Another thing you may want to try is checking people around areas your frequent. When you use Check, it will display the character name and active shell on that person. Then just try sending that person a /tell!

I'll be honest: sometimes people are douchy about being asked, but many people are not I know we got a few of our members from people just asking then applying on our site. (sadly, we are on Besaid)
