While I am moderately enjoying this event. Which, aside from Chapter 1, you only need to do once just to complete the quest. I don't like exactly how they are doing the "story" part of it. Well, not completely.
The "story" of why Lightning is in Eorzea at the moment is only being told by Lightning herself during and after each fate she ques in more and more about what could be going on. And I'll admit, I am interested.
But there really isn't much to this event. And I think that is why most players are feeling a little unsatisfied. SE definitely needs to take a look at some other MMORPGs out there and how they handle events. Make quests more interactive and not just "Kill x, turn in drop y, ok done". You'd think there'd be more of a story. I mean, I know it's just a limited time event, but as Velveteer mentioned it could have had instanced portions in a specially designed area(s) just for this event.
Do it up SE. Impress us.
I will admit, the majority of the weapon designs that you can receive from this event are quite honestly, in my opinion, some of the best designs I've seen in this game so far (funny they aren't FF14 designs). It's a crying shame the stats on them only make them useful for a few levels at most if you haven't leveled up that class beyond level 13. I believe the weapon drops from the first 3 dungeons are better stat-wise than the event items which means these weapons only have a functional usefulness of being used at level 13 and 14. Even though most of them have an exceptional appearance that even makes some relic weapons inferior by that comparison. The added effects that some of the weapons do really is quite cool. Why don't more weapons do these kind of things? Hopefully that's something we can all expect from future weapons when the level cap raises. There are a few limited examples with already existing weapons (the crafted lvl 50 BLM and WAR weapons for example), and some minimal effects with some primal weapons and some relics, but it's not enough in my opinion. (There's also the Odin sword, which is amazing in design.. but not in functionality)
So the most anyone else can really hope for is that, months and months down the line, when the vanity system is finally introduced we'll finally be able to do something moderately useful with these types of event/special items.
But as far as the event itself goes, well.. I'll hold off total judgment until I've done stage 4. But if it's anything like the first two stages, which I am nearly 100% sure it will be given what we have seen from every event in the game so far, the hardest and longest part of the whole event is waiting for the FATE to appear (and then hoping Lightning also appears). While I have moderately enjoyed the "story" so far, the "quests" and FATEs have not really been that fun. I did enjoy seeing this unique mob from FF13 in FF14 during stage 2, but that was a relatively brief experience and was not even remotely challenging (not that I expected it to be).
