It's quite simple. SE went with the "mainstream casual MMO" path for FFXIV to get more money. Before this game was released, SE was in heavy financial issues. Now with the success of FFXIV, they're doing pretty okay again.

Going casual is the key to get money today, simple as that. Attract the mainstream.

what is funny is that I have been buying DL armor for my alts not even level 50 yet because ive been capping Philosophy tomes from grinding the 300 Mythology tomes each week .

Kinda lame when you think about it , should have to gear up on the job you are playing not use another job to gear up other jobs right ? I guess all it does it speed up the end game even faster.

Pretty much all I need to do is farm Relics on those jobs when I hit 50 .

I enjoy FFXI during it release but now with exam/assignment/classes I rather not have the route of FFXIV: camp a 24hr pop HNM, waiting hours and hours in Jueno for a XP pty.

As an FFXI player since 2003 I so agree with this post (OP). I feel the same way! Though each thought I have about what it is that's "missing" I just know it would "upset" all the younger players use to wow and what not.
Imagine it taking 1 year or so to reach maxlevel, or tank losing aggro = into the player having hate dying in 1 hit. Or monsters so tough they're not really farmable til the game has been out 3 years. Those areas you dare not go into.
I mean every thing that takes longer than 5 min = a new complain thread on the forums. The devs today hardly have any choice.

Also FFXI had about the same subs from first week til 7-10 years later. Says a lot about it.

Open zone with mobs you cannot solo would be great.
So would be events that matters(ie not fate)/pop nm/rare monsters.

Add some depth to the game and the zones.

Right now it feels more than diablo 3 than like a real mmo : dungeon spam and itemization only.

It's sad when people don't realize they don't matter anymore in todays market.
FFXIV wasn't designed to be like XI, deal with it. It's a different game, as much as EQII was from EQ.
    Deal with it

    PS

And turning this into XI won't help retaining players, considering how much of a niche XI has always been

FFXI had a larger marketshare than XIV does. XI also had excellent player retention.

Participating in what exactly? So you feel since this game barely even beat the numbers of an 11 year old MMO, that it's winning this so called competition you have going? I will say one thing, FFXI might not have had the numbers but it sure was a lot more fun than FFXIV in my opinion.

Just think about what you are saying. 2-300k subscribers, paying their $12.99 (or whatever it is) every month. For 12 years.

You think XIV will be around in another 9 years? Or SWTOR? Or Rift?

That player retention is incredible. There are so few other games that can match or exceed it. WoW and EvE can. It made FFXI the most profitable game in SE's history, bar none.
