PoE wants to have a talk with you.
I don't think the game needs Trees, that is not at all Final Fantasy. However, a proper Cross Class system could be really really cool. They need to look at their skills.
"Fear, Belief, and Love are phenomena that determine the course of our lives. These forces begin long before we are born and continue after we perish."
I disagree. I don't want to be forced to level up classes I don't enjoy just because I need to junction that class with my current one in order to be considered "Effective."
"Fear, Belief, and Love are phenomena that determine the course of our lives. These forces begin long before we are born and continue after we perish."
Its impossible to have every single build be ''viable'' in a game, so that point is irrelevant. My point was that trees can work and allow the player for more customization. Atleast more than we have now..
Again, it's easier to make them work in an ARPG than an MMORPG. ARPG are much cheaper and easier to make as a whole.
It's been that way for awhile in the mmo world. We do have less options than some out there but once every "class" gets two jobs we'll have plenty of differences. Take WoW for instance while they had specializations a shadow priest was a shadow priest a holy priest was a holy priest. WoW also had worse class balancing at launch because of it. If I had to pick "Variety" over "Balance" I'd pick balance every time.
Again, I'd like to see more jobs but builds? I could do without. Cross class? I can do without.

Trees sound good on paper, but when in the game:
1) Some people will ask for the best way to do the tree
2) Some people will demand that you be a certain spec or else you won't get invited
3) Some people will look online for the best spec you can do for a specific job.
4) Very few people do the opposite of what the "norm" says and they do what they want regardless
In the end Spec trees are no different then a predetermined setup.
I am all for additional useful cross-over abilities. But you do realize how much time and problems they would run into in balancing the classes based on every ability crossing over. Not to mention PvP. I think the lack of useful cross-over abilities is more for their sanity.I like thinking up Builds. I know it doesn't seem fun to everyone, and even if the build is cookie cutter, I like getting their on my own. Earlier I was looking at THM and wondering if I could Cross Class Skill an interesting build. I noticed that Marauder's Bloodbath skill was Cross Class to everyone. I began to think, HMMM a THM dropping some tasty Fire IIIs with Bloodbath going could be really cool! Whoooops, only works on PHYSICAL damage. So why even allow it to cross? Okay okay... I then moved on to maybe some Archer skills. I had to get it to 15 anyways to go to BLM so obviously it must have some potential for Cross Class Skill coolness. I see that Raging Strikes, nice oh and Quelling Strikes too. Nice nice... then I see Hawk's Eye and I think, THAT might be cool, maybe it adds crit or something. What do my eyes see, DEX increase and Physical accuracy... WHY? Why do they have these Cross Class Skills that are utterly useless? I am so confused by this system.

Exactly.
