I agree with you there, I've begun wearing an Iron Haubergeon on my 37 arc for parties, and even though my defense is higher with a scouting jacket, in a party, I can wear the hauby and get a nice little str boost that I otherwise wouldn't have access to. The loss in defense is irrelevant since I am not soloing, and can devote more gear to damage dealing and/or crowd control.

I have had no big problems with setting attributes, my stats lean a bit toward the physical side, but I still have fairly high magic stats as well. I also have all the tier one attrubute traits, and can tweak my stats higher or lower depending on the job I'm playing at the time. I think the people who are complaining are the ones who squandered thier points in one or two attributes in the name of being an uber mage or tank, but fail to realize that every job uses every stat to some degree.

I have no objection to giving jobs more exclusive abilities that give them a niche to fill in party play, just as long as the ability to play solo isn't ruined. This has been the first MMO I've played where solo play is possible with any job, and I remember leveling some jobs in ffxi that were not in high demand for parties, but were not suitable for soloing, (pre-SATA thf for example) and sitting in Jeuno or Whitegate for 3-4 hours waiting for a party invite was never fun.
